Rough Water Swim
updated: Sep 12, 2011, 12:40 PM

By Aquaholic

I was down in La Jolla on September 11th with over 2,000 other swimmers from near and far, aged under 8 to over 80! My 14 y/o son and husband swam in the 81st annual La Jolla Rough Water swim. Here are a few shots of some of the races which range from 250 yards to 3 miles in length. The sound of that many arms and legs flapping at once is quite impressive, literally a sea of humanity! It was a beautiful day for this event, and I'm happy for the freedom to be there on that day of all days...thanks America!

Yikes - I'll bet all that churning was a potential feast for the great whites that have been lurking off those waters the past few weeks.

Rough water swim, no thanks.

All great photos. Love the color. But there's something special about the first one. It reminds of a drawing or maybe a puzzle our family had in the early '60's. Looks vintage to me.

If you have an iPhone and took a "Hipstamatic" photo of this photo, that's what it looked like.

Thanks Dan, yes, I see what you mean about the first image. Usually, I don't alter my photos, but I confess to punching up the color and sharpness on that one...all my pics turned out rather bland due to the strong sunlight...sigh, I'm learning!

@431P...did you happen to note that this was the 81st annual?....and nary a shark attack all these years.

those are colorful photos in a beautiful setting - and so much action! Hope your son and husband had fun in the water... Looks like you made the most of your perch watching them! Lovely place to be...

Aqua, I haven't posted one photo in ten years that I didn't alter in some way. It's no different than changing the f-stop or shutter speed on a camera. Or dodging while printing. Feel free to alter in the future.

Great photos. Instead of worring about the men in the dark gray suits, I'd be concerned about having my goggles kicked of during that start.

I grew up in San Diego, born and raised. I remember this event, but the one that was the real story was the side line event from this one called the "Rough Water Drink". When the swim started, a little ways down in LJ Cove all the yachts would pull in and the party would commence in grand SD style! People paddling on surfboards... barges... people dressed up, keggers on boats, water balloon launches. It was INSANE Animal House style. I doubt that they let this go on anymore, as it was absolutely bonkers. So much fun! I was lucky to grow up there.
