What Rodent?

I am vacationing in the Queensbury/Lake George area of upstate New York and I went out to my rental car one morning and saw this daring fellow sniffing around a tree near the front parking lot. Mind you this is right in the middle of town. What is it?

AKA woodchuck quoting there the childhood, tongue-twisting rhyme, "How much wood can a woodchuck chuck...."

I never knew a woodchuck and a groundhog were the same thing.... I always learn something new on Edhat! :)

I grew up in NJ and we had a family of these guys that wouldn't go away. That is a groundhog.

Yep, the groundhog is nicknamed a woodchuck because...

"How much wood would a groundhog chuck if a groundhog could chuck wood" didn't seem like such a catchy tongue-twister !!

This is the overgrown gopher named "Punkxsutawney Phil" who pokes his head out of his burrow on Groundhog Day to see if it's spring yet.

Hey! Summer a year ago I was at Scroon Lake! Nice part of the country. We didn't see any groundhogs though.

They're very destructive to gardens --- think gophers and multiply.

Scroon Lake ! I watched the July 4th fireworks there a few years back ,,, we have a cabin at Brant Lake but there is no fireworks show there. I've been wondering how the area fared in the aftermath of the hurricane rains ? There was some nasty wave action documented at Lake George.

I think the gov't is preparing to pay reparations to the groundhogs for stealing their land ... but they never signed a treaty.

Thanx for the memories...I grew up in Mass. & spent numerous summers at Lake George as a child. The last time I was there (as an adult), I couldn't figure out how I ever even got my feet in that cold water. Surprised to see that woodchuck there as I assumed that any wildlife would become less & less visible as population grows.
