Where is the best place in Santa Barbara to get a classic California roll? Price and quality are both factors.

There's a little place tucked into the front of Albertson's in the University Plaza Shopping Center (just past Costco), not a full sushi bar but they do rolls to order, classic California roll and several variations. Great price, some rolls for $5.

Roll Your Way in Albertson's Goleta is very affordable and the basic CA roll is good. The purple rice they use in the wraps is very unique and delicious. Very basic stuff here, but very tasty and affordable - guess now I know where lunch is coming from!

Edomasa is the best sushi place in town! I have been to lots of other sushi places and they don't come anywhere near the size and cost that Edomasa offers. The California roll is great, but you really should try the Crunchy Roll or the Deluxe Buffalo Volcano Roll. mmmmmm :)

Edomasa for a good bargain, unpretentious, family-type atmosphere and good quality sushi and other Japanese dishes, especially if you have non-sushi eating children or others in your party. Arigato for a $plurge. No bargains there but excellent food Shintori is OK, but with prices not that far off from Arigato's, I'd probably just go with Arigato between the two. Sushi Teri is kind of "fast food" style sushi. It's OK, but wouldn't be my first choice.

It is such a beautiful day and if you are going for lunch I would go to the sushi place at the harbor. Not because the food is great, but you can sit outside, look at the ocean, people watch and take a stroll if you want. The prices are reasonable

So many different recommendations! Has Edhat ever done a price check on California Rolls around town? I tried to search "California Roll" in the search box, but it wouldn't take the last 'L'. Maybe it has an "L" problem like many Japanese speakers do!

Oh Whoa - totally forgot about that hidden jewel inside the Goleta Albertsons ! I love that place for lunch - very fresh - very affordable... thanks for reminding me ! --- by the way Shorebird - Cali roll = rice, crab meat, cucumber, and avocado (sesame seeds on roll).

There are also two ways to roll a California Roll. Seaweed on the outside, or inside out (rice on the outside). Note that most places do not use real crab meat, but imitation crab. Didn't Edhat do a survey on that once?

Most important is high quality of food and preparation. California rolls don't have raw fish, but those who have eaten unchecked fish with nematodes, live the rest of their lives in hellish misery.

A traditional California Roll used to be seaweed, then rice, then a smear of wasabi (green horseradish paste), followed by crab salad (real crab mixed with mayonnaise -- these days fake "Krab" is used instead, which is really cheap Pollack or other substitute) and sliced avocado. Some places added some fish roe -- usually tobiko (flying fish eggs) or masago (smelt eggs). Inside out version was first seaweed is coated with rice, then turned over, so rice is on outside; rest of fillings on inside. Then entire thing is rolled -- either into a cone for a handroll or into a tube and cut into sliced pieces. Voila! California Roll. Because of the common substitution of fake Krab for the real thing, I rarely eat it now.
