Short Term Gym
updated: Aug 28, 2011, 4:39 PM

Does anyone know of a gym in town where you can just pay-by-the-visit or sign up for a only week or two?

Most gyms will sell a daily guest pass. Call and ask for prices and policies. I do it all the time when I travel.

When I was new in town, the Spectrum Club offered a 7 day free guest pass. That was in December, though.

I think the Santa Barbara Athletic Club has a drop in rate. It's about $20 tho, as I recall.

If you drive around in any neighborhood you will usually find a gargage door up and plenty of unused workout equipment right there in plain view. Pull up and get in a few reps on whatever machine is easilly accessable. If the homeowner comes out, look embarassed and pull out a slip of paper and say, "uh oh......this isn't Gold's Gym??" Make your apologies, and just move on to the next open garage. This is a great way to meet people and try out home equipment that is usually new and/ or never used. Sometimes the homeowners will say .."feel like buying that??" You can get some great deals. Hope this helps.

YMCA is a good choice too!

If the garage idea doesn't work ;-), there's a pretty decent and free outdoor workout circuit at Dwight Murphy Park. And, of course, great stretches of beach to run, bikes available to rent for use on our miles of bike paths and lanes, and hills full of easily accessed trails. We live in paradise. I often wonder why more people don't take advantage of the great outdoors for their workouts here.

Goleta valley athletic club sells cards that allow a certain number of visits. Ask at the front desk.

If you go online to a club's website you can usually get a free trial pass for a few days. Or just act like you're interested in joining and they'll hook you up with a week's pass or so. Years ago I once got a free month at SBAC when I was looking around at different gyms.

UCSB's Rec Cen is $12 a day if you're out that way.

Killer B in Goleta has flexible rates, daily, monthly.

I just checked out Spectrum and it was impressive. They gave me a free 3-day pass and if you like it you can sign up for monthly (something like $53) but you have to pay a one-time $55 fee. It's less if you do an annual and go in with a partner. I'm going to sign up for 6 months since I'm there half the year.

Unfortunately, gyms tend to make it cost prohibitive to sign up for daily passes. Their key metric to success is monthly/ annual memberships, thus they make the cost of a daily pass disproportionately high relative to a monthly pass. 24 hour fitness is probably the cheapest in town, although you get what you pay for, plus parking can be a challenge. I can't speak for the YMCA though, and I have heard their prices are reasonable and I know they have parking.
Good luck!

Re: 208995 - Hey I strongly recommend against going into someone's garage and using their workout equipment. They could call the police or sheriff and you could get arrested for trespassing or something! I really do thing that this is a really reckless suggestion that could backfire on you. Not a good idea! Seriously - what were you thinking? I"m shocked and dismayed by such a suggestion on this public forum! But if you DO use the gym equipment in somebody's garage and get caught, then just say you are a inspector from OSHA and you are reviewing the safety of their equipment - and that you ALSO need to check their shower to make sure the hot water heater is safe as well as the refrigerator and test some of the food to make sure it is safe and not spoiled.

In the old days we didn't need gyms and we kept fit. How about running around the block or doing some pushups and situps and jumping jacks and yoga stretches in your motel room. Why pay for a gym?

Bring a towel or two, one for you, and the other for the machines

In the olden days we had muscles; in the these modern days, we ride rather than walk or :::gasp::: run and we need machines to exercise our selves.

Key2Fitness on State has a daily pass for $10 or you can probably get a weekly rate from the owner, he's pretty flexible.

Oldilocks, I'm with you. Terracing a steep hillside was our gym for a few years. Now those terraces help feed us. House work, yard work/ gardening, walking or biking -- it all adds up to some great exercise, costs less (if you are careful not to injure yourself), and you get added benefits for years.

OP here again. I put air in the tires of my (ancient, heavy) bike and took off for an all-day ride around town (with stops to admire local scenery). Not even sore today!
