Steak and Potatoes
updated: Aug 28, 2011, 7:20 AM

My parents are coming into town, and I'd like to take them out for a nice dinner. They are 70+, steak and potatoes people. We've done Lucky's and Cava in the past, and other ideas?

Places People Are Talking About:

The Tee Off on upper State has great steaks (the filet oscar is awesome), prime-rib soup, and a killer Scotch selection! The only caveat is that it can get loud in there when it's busy; 70+ doesn't aways = good hearing, but going early might help . . .

Excuse me. 70+ plus these days is not exactly the road to the glue factory. I am 77,worked until 70 and my hearing is 100%.

I'd try Hollister Ranch in Goleta Calle Real Market Place. It's cheerful and bright. Or our local Chuck's, where we have been going since the day it opened.

Try the beautiful new patio at Chuck's Waterfront Grill at the harbor. Or, if they like a more casual atmosphere, go upstairs to the Endless Summer Bar Cafe for live music and an awesome harbor view.

Over 70 may sound old, but my parents are in that category and fully functioning, active people. They don't seem old.

All good, but nah. . ..

Barbecue your own. buy the high-priced meat and get some bread at Our Daily Broad.

Bake a couple of spuds, do a green salad....

If you don't have a BBQ grill, go get one.

Totally agree with 208758P! Costco for Prime Rib Eye steaks [cook them over Red Oak], D’Angelos for bread, and our local farmer’s market(s) for heirloom potatoes, and of course, some local vino to wash it all down with. Yummy!!! If you don’t want to work, Holdren’s or Lucky’s.

Each to his own. I am not a barbecue aficionado and I prefer to go out to eat when entertaining family and friends. I find it relaxing and enjoyable to catch up - to converse over a meal prepared by someone else. However, if the guests are staying with one for some time one cannot normally do this every night. It could become very costly.

I'm with 758P--buy good ribeyes and bake some spuds. For older folks most steakhouses are going to be too noisy for conversation and too dark to read the menu!

But if going out is necessary, Jill's, Chuck's, Jane.

The Hitching Post in Buellton is the best steak place in the county. It's a beautiful drive over the Pass to Solvang, tour there a bit & then savor the BEST steaks anywhere.

The food is not 5 star but they have great comfortable red booths, the steaks are not prime, but you not paying $35 ala carte either The drinks are good especially the old fashion types like the Manhatten and well the Old Fashion. Also unlike Joes the have kept their fabulous collection of old Santa Barbara photos. The service is usually very good and even more fun if you get Renee who has worked there at least 30 years. It is mostly a older crowd of locals who always having a great time. Also Chaucers a really good independent bookstore is a few doors down if you want to check it out before dinner

Tee-Off or Hitching Post, although the latter is maybe too far out of town for this occasion. I've only been to Jill's a couple of times since it expanded and both times found that the steaks were not cooked nearly as nicely as they used to be with fewer tables being served, once almost raw, another time well on the way to medium, and both times ordered medium-rare. Great quality meat from Shalhoob Meats there, though. Now I buy Shalhoob's steaks at Tri-County Produce and grill them at home when I'm feeling too poor to go to the Tee-Off.

There is a reason Harry's is full of blue-hairs. That's who they cater to. And they do a good job. Great variety on the menu. Nice big semi-circular booths with vintage red naugahyde. Some of the stiffest drinks in town. They usually don't take reservations for a party of less than 6 people.

The best places for great beef are not in Santa Barbara. They are Jocko's in Nipomo (not Little Jocko's that's different); The Hitching Post in Casmalia (also in Buellton but I like Casmalia better); and the Far Western in Guadalupe (soon to move to Orcutt). For a nice steak dinner with your parents, Chuck's at the Waterfront (my parent's favorite); Tee-Off; Holdren's; and the Palms in Carpinteria (you can get a filet for $16.50 and cook it yourself; can't beat that deal).

Definitely take the ride into Santa Ynez Valley on a Sunday and enjoy brunch at the Vineyard House, tour area shops and attractions (miniature horse farm, wineries, Happy Canyon, hate to say the casino but it does exist) until the late afternoon, then try an excellent dinner at The Red Barn or Mattei's Brothers Restaurant. I'm nearly 70 and these are places we love to frequent. We do live here, which makes it easier for us to enjoy these sites, but your parents will love it, I'm sure.

The Red Barn in Santa Ynez is outstanding in every category, especially the unique daily specials.

Pro tip: Soup or salad comes with every meal. Their homemade soups are amazing, and I'm rarely a "soup person." Also, the salad is ultra-fresh. Ask for bleu cheese crumbles as that really adds a nice cheese punch to an already delicious salad.

The always yummy homemade desserts are worth saving room, so go easy on the entree & take leftovers home.

I agree Jill's is a great place, good prices as well. Harry's is good but can be loud (we have stopped having dinner there with grandma who is now 80 because of the noise). If you are going to stay home and grill it yourself go to Shalhoobs on Gray Street they sell wholesale to the public and you can get whatever cuts you want! SY is good but if they are not up for the car ride call Jill's and make reservations for 5pm - before it gets busy.
