World's Safest Beach

The final days of summer are among us.
Living next to the Carpinteria State Beach Campground has some pretty cool perks; the waft of apple smoked bacon on Sunday mornings and the wild laughter of tots playing at the beach.
Per the Carpinteria State Beach Interpretation Master Plan of 2009, something like 850,000 people visit the Carpinteria State Park annually.
It was in 1922 that Thomas Fish and his sisters first opened the Carpinteria Beach Auto Camp. Their advertising campaign stated that Carpinteria Beach was a "Fine, Safe, Sandy Bathing Beach" from where the renowned "World's Safest Beach" was borne.
I took a bike ride through the campground today on what I believe is among the busiest weekends of the year; not a parking spot or empty campsite anywhere. As I'm leisurely pedaling, I can't help but imagine and reflect on the decades of summer loves that this park has been privy to and the summer secrets that have been confessed over a late-night campfire, especially when Mr. T (tequila) is around. Family bonding is strong at the campground; every dad is a superhero and every mom becomes extra cool.
A wise friend once told me that democracy is borne through open discussion and I can't think of a better place for open and lively discussion than a car camping trip. No computers, no telephones; just good old face-to-face discussion. Kinda makes me think our elected officials should consider a car camping trip to Carpinteria to hash out a compromise for the good of the people. But I digress.
