Times Have Changed

I loved the Bobcat post this morning. I thought people might find the following excerpt interesting. I came across it while doing research for a book. It appeared in a San Francisco newspaper (The Call) on August 2, 1912. Note the last line. Times have changed!:

"Pursued by a wildcat, which forced them to flee, an 11 year old girl and her companion. both of Carpinteria, narrowly escaped death. The girls, accompanied by a dog which generally follows them in their rambles, went into the hills behind the 11 year old's home. While they were playing, one of the children saw the wildcat hiding on the limb of a tree. Screaming with fear, the child ran. At the same moment, the animal sprang at her. The dog rushed to the aid of the girls and engaged the wild cat in a fierce tussle, the children making all speed toward a packing house some distance away...they told of their experience and a number of men hurried to the spot. They found the dog and the wildcat still fighting, but the battle soon ended when one of the men succeeded in killing the wildcat with a blow from a shovel.

THe little girls will be presented with the skin of the wildcat."

Wow, cool sighting. The growl must have been a little...intimidating. I'm glad you didn't lose your head and also managed to get us this fantastic picture.

It's the wild out there, folks. They have way more right to be there than we do, but if we keep our calm like this poster, most often things will be fine. Though I have to say, this is one reason never ever to have your dog off leash ahead of you on a trail. It only takes one time.

I almost always have my dogs off leash when on trail. Yes, freedom is dangerous, but way better than the alternative.
BTW, a hundred years ago, "wildcat" may have meant not a bobcat, but a mountain lion.

Yes, I'm sure "wildcat" in the story referred to a mountain lion. Bobcats normally wouldn't pounce on, or chase, a human. Great stories, thanks for sharing both!
