Montecito Inn
March 2, 2010
Why is the face of Charlie Chaplin on the Montecito Inn? (Yes, we started you out with a bit of a gimme to get this year's March Edness contest rolling, but never fear .. they'll get harder from here on out.) Is it because he stayed there a lot?
Yes, but the connection is more significant than that. Chaplin, silent film star of the 1910s and 20's, built the place as a getaway for his friends in the early days of Hollywood. It was constructed in 1928. Of course, the hotel has gone through several remodels since then. The exact location of this photo is on the Coast Village Road-facing sign for the hotel along Olive Mill Road. The other side of the sign, facing the highway, also has the face.
