State Building

The sign in the picture clearly states that the building is in the State of California. We all know that California is a state of mind - an altered state, somewhere between paranoia and ecstasy. We also know that California is not a building in Santa Barbara, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a building in Santa Barbara that has the words, "State of California" on it.

This particular building is at 411 E Canon Perdido. Although the name of the State is on the wall, the building is not dedicated to matters of the State. In fact, Santa Barbara's most-liked daily newspaper has an office there. We are talking about the Daily Sound, whose name has an odd ring to it as well. Although the body of water off our shoreline fits the legal definition of a sound, it is almost always called a channel.
