The Other Mural
March 19, 2009
There is a famous mosaic mural facing Victoria Street, on the side of the old Vons Supermarket. It's a six-panel tile piece by Joseph Knowles called, History of Santa Barbara County. It shows Native Americans, Spanish settlers, industrialization, and other things.
There is another tile mosaic on Victoria Street, just two blocks away (between Anacapa and Santa Barbara Streets), across the street from the old mortuary, that is now Penfield & Smith. This mural is not so famous, and judging by the scarcity of correct identifications in our March Edness contest, not as memorable.
This tile mosaic, outside the Mullen and Henzell building at 112 East Victoria Street, depicts a happy summer scene, with birds, fish, and mountains. Ed is not an art expert, nor does he play one on TV, but he referred to the style of the mural as, 'abstract' - a lot like the work of Ken Nack, former Chair of the SBCC Art Department. The initials on the bottom left of the mural say, "EA" - like the video game maker.
Identifying the location of the mural earned contestants 5 March Edness points.
