Big Grey Whale
updated: Aug 12, 2011, 7:01 AM
By Aquaholic
While on our "tour de California & Oregon" my son and I got to see this 45 ft. Grey Whale in the Klamath river, just under the 101 fwy bridge. She and her calf have been living in the river for about a month now. Scientists have no idea why, but the locals are loving the hordes of people clamoring to see her...it was pretty cool.

An adult female gray whale that lived in Northern California's Klamath River for 53 days died early Tuesday after beaching itself twice on a sandbar.

This might be therapeutic for the whale. I'm not a marine biologist, so this is speculation, but have had several salt-water aquariums. Aquarium keepers sometimes put a salt-water specie into fresh water to rid it of parasites. The lower osmotic pressure of the fresh water damages cell walls of organisms, but usually the host cannot tolerate it for long either. Since this is a marine mammal and not a fish, it may be more tolerant. Or maybe she's just on a low salt diet.

Adavis - its great that you love Oregon (I do to) but most of the Klamath is in California, certainly this spot where the 101 crosses over it.

What a great addition to your trip, Aquaholic! Glad you heard about it and had the time to check it out. Pretty rare to be closer than most people ever get in a boat. Thanks for sharing.

I appreciated the correction and aparently so did the poster of the corrected comment. I am glad to know that area was in the California portion of Aquaholic's trip to Oregon, because I had also assumed the whale was in Oregon, based on the way the original post was written.

I am jealous. Drove through there in mid July on a very foggy morning and didn't see anything. Couldn't even see the bears on the ends of the bridge until we were up close and personal. Great photos - do you mind if I put them in my scrapbook?

I fell in love with this story and pics - as I usually do with Aquaholics shares. I just read that "Mama" is gone. She died this morning. RIP beautiful creature :(
