Edhat Dog
June 12, 2006 - Dog Speed

The Edhat Dog did not win the State Street Dog Mile on Sunday. She blamed it on her leash. As much as she pulled and pulled on the long nylon cord attached to her harness, it would not move any faster than a slow plodding trot. The dogs in front of her did not carry such a handicap. At one point in the seemingly eternal five minutes plus, she even turned to see what the matter could be. All she saw at the other end was Edhat Dedicated Staffer Peter; her truest of true loves. Surely the problem could not be with him. And so she plodded on.

It seems that Edhat subscriber Iron Scotty, and his dog Iron Toby (well, not really his dog, but his friend’s dog, and dogs are man’s best friend,
Pink Feet
so friends of friends are friends as well) had a very fast leash. Toby however, is not a dog who likes to rush through life. Toby is a dog who believes it’s important to experience each moment, to stop and smell the curbs on State Street, so to speak. And that’s the story he’s sticking with to explain why he attempted a dramatic pause in the middle of the Mile. But Iron Scotty said it wasn’t the right time, so onward they flew.

Well, the funny thing is, both Iron Scotty’s and Ed’s barks were worse than their bites. For all the smack-talking going on between Iron and Edhat this past week, the fastest dog in the State Street Mile, was a little lab mix dragging a kid named Maxwell behind. Andrew Maxwell is a repeat winner of the Dog Mile – but the Edhat dog says she’s never seen the puppy who ran with him before. A rental, she mumbled.

Before the race, the dedicated staff of edhat.com left the Edhat dog and our fellow dedicated staffer at the starting line and ran our own
Dog Group
little race back to the green car in order to get to the finish line for pictures of the winners like Ed told us to. We froze when we spotted a sleek greyhound skipping past. A Ringer, we gasped. But alas, the greyhound showed up well out of the money at the end of the race. The Edhat dog tells us, you can only go as fast as your leash.

All in all, it was a fun day. There were friendly faces and wagging tails everywhere. There was even a big bowl of water for the runners. Mike Takeuchi, famous sports journalist, was calling the race. Look out, Trevor. Dude and Lani, twin Golden Retrievers, and former neighbors of Edhat,

got in an all-in-good-fun tussle on their way to the finish line. Their runners were not that amused.

Friday's contest was to guess the first and last place times in the race. Those times were 4:55 and 10:24, respectively. The Edhat dog (not the least bit tired) inspected all the contest entries and determined that Annielope (4:53,10:12) was the closest and is the winner of the coveted Edhat t-shirt. Didn't win? Oh well, neither did the dog. But, you can check out the pictures we took at the race. They are guaranteed to put a mile on your face!
