May 26, 2006 - Hats!
One of the requirements of working for the dedicated staff of edhat.com is that you have to wear a lot of hats. Of course we’re not talking about real hats, like the kind Ed wears, but metaphorical hats, like the kind Jack wears. You know, Jack-Of-All-Trades. We have to count things, write articles, take pictures, crop pictures, drive around in our green car, build web pages, drink coffee, and send out newsletters.
But of course, the hardest thing in the job description (aside from putting up with all of Ed's idiosyncrasies – ‘EDiosyncrasies’ as we call them),
is that we have to come up with story ideas. And, when the going gets tough and our dedicated brains are tired and empty, we fall back on common themes – open-toed shoes, cell phones, and hats.
Yesterday, it was hats. In the past, we have done stories about hats at the Farmer's Market, hat logos, and hat types. One year, we counted Santa Hats in the Holiday Parade. Yesterday afternoon we counted hats on top of the heads of people who were visiting Stearns Wharf – mostly tourists on vacation, one would think.
With the clouds and the rain finally on a vacation of their own, it was definitely a hat day. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are just what five out of five doctors recommend for a day like yesterday.
Miles away from the people who matter, tourists seem to be more practical than style-conscious. The vacation hat tends to be different than the Farmer’s Market hat. While the latter is often straw with a big brim, the former is often cotton and floppy. Many of the non-tourists (read homeless) people down by the beach were wearing baseball hats.
We stayed at the beach for a while counting. It wasn’t so bad. At the end of our count, we found 42% of men and 27% of women were hat-attired
(or visor-attired, because we counted those as well). Lordog4012 was the closest guesser with a guess of 42%/26%. Lordog4012 wins an Edhat t-shirt (we’re currently out of hats).
