Penny Drives
updated: Aug 12, 2011, 5:47 AM
I have a habit of keeping pennies in a box in my office because a high school was collecting them some ten years ago. Are there other organizations that are having penny drives?

La Colina Junior High School has a penny drive, though it is usually held in the spring.

San Marcos High organizes one with other local schools, including La Colina every Dec., which all does to a local charity (but I don't remember which one)

Me, I have a small treasure chest sitting on a bookshelf into which I daily put all my pocket change. Every few months I count and wrap the pennies, nickels, and dimes (the quarters I use for laundry), it nets me about $35 - $40 bucks. Extra cash for non-essentials. Been doing this for years.

Maybe you could do a penny date count, like Edhat did in 2004.

I'm working through 40 years of saved pennies, looking for old copper ones and wheat ones. Why? I'm insane, I think, plus we're going to have to move, so I need to downsize. I'm going to turn in all the newer ones for cash and give up on this insane penny collection. I really enjoyed the penny date count story. Others are insane in similar ways, obviously.

Maybe some people have enough pennies to pay for a year of EDHAT?

I totally sort through my pennies. Happily spend the useless new ones and keep the ones from '82 and before... when they were still made with copper.

Keep an eye out for the special Lincoln pennies that show periods of his life.

The Santa Ynez Valley Elementary School Fourth Grade was collecting pennies to buy land in the Rainforest. I am not sure if this is ongoing or if it is over. Would be worth a call. Good cause.
