Cataract Treatment
updated: Aug 11, 2011, 6:39 AM

I am looking for the best local Opthamologist to treat cataracts. It is very difficult to make any determinations online, and I don't have many friends that have had it performed.. So I ask the informed and intelligent readers of our beloved Edhat for their candid pro's and con's.

Winthrop is the best. What ever you do, do not go to Katsev.

Pavaloff did a great job for us - nice guy, seems to be an excellent surgeon, really knows his stuff. His office staff leaves a lot to be desired, though.

Both my primary care physician and I had our cataracts removed and replaced with intraocular lenses by Dr. Katsev. I've had no problems and neither has my doctor. In fact, my vision is now 20/10.

One anecdotal story. Dr. Katsev gives an overview of the procedure in his office. One older gentleman was a challenge due to his poor hearing and his general curmudgeonly attitude. Instead of being short with this man, Dr. Katsev kindly talked a bit louder, and after determining the man was still unable to hear well, he said he would talk with him independently. As the meeting broke up, I listened as Dr. Katsev kindly went over the same information with patience. To me, it showed a side of this opthalmologist surgeon that is probably seldom seen.

Zelko did my dad's cataracts and he seemed to do a really good job. He came highly recommended, too.

Bryant Lum is an opthamologist with offices in both Ventura and Santa Barbara. I have been treating with him for years because of my dry eye syndrome (I think he saved my vision) and now have begun to have issues with cataracts and perhaps glaucoma. I trust him implicitly. If I need surgery, I will have him do it.

If your eyes are important to you, do not go to katsev.

Katsev did not help my vision at all.. I had to seek help from another doctor in order to help the eye heal for a year and still, my vision is blurry. He texted during appointments, had large group appointments and threw a fit during the surgery. It was all a nightmare.
On the other hand, Dr. Winthrop is an excellent surgeon and very professional.

Dr. Wilson Wu is my choice. He has a PhD and MD from top institutions. He is knowledgable, explains things well and is patient.

Dr. Wu is the best in town and most qualified. Have heard nothing but negative stories about Katsev.

Bryant Lum has taken care of my husband and is now taking care of me. My husband has glaucoma and cataracts and Dr. Lum did a fantastic job dealing with all that. Now I have a problem that he is dealing with that will, hopefully, prevent my getting glaucoma. His only draw back is - all surgery is done in Ventura on Tuesdays - and office hours in Goleta are only on Wednesday afternoon. But - even with that, he is worth the hassle.

Beware of the time they spend during surgery. One ophthalmologist in particular is proud of his 2 minute cataracts. He is sloppy and inconsistent. When they go that fast things happen (wrong patient, wrong eye, etc).

Dr. Paveloff is very thorough, kind and caring. He sent me to a retinal specialist when he needed to, which says he doesn't have an ego that will keep him from getting the patient the treatment he/she needs! He has been my opthamologist for several years now. He is quite knowledgeable and well respected in his field.

He's not bad to look at either! :)

I second RinconReggie about both Winthrop and Katsev. Winthrop is the best but I don't think he takes HBOs if that makes a difference.

Having mine done by Michael Paveloff next week, so I'll have to let you know. But I trust him regardless.

Make sure to ask about getting one lens for near vision and one for far if you don't want to be relegated to having reading glasses on hand all the time.

Dr. Zelko is very caring! He saved my vision. (Though, he may scare you discussing worst case scenarios.)

PS I went to him for a non-surgical trauma.

Paveloff, hands down...best choice in this area!!

Listen to all if us who warn you away from Katsev, believe it!!

Winthrop may be competent but there's just way too much attitude there for my money.
