DOG OF THE WEEK

Molly
updated: Oct 08, 2011, 9:15 AM

Molly is a just a regular dog, and a bit of a miracle, too.

This Beagle-mix is somewhat legendary at Hendry's Beach, where we have our daily outing...she survived a fall from the cliff above, while we were walking at the Douglas Preserve this April [she had surgery for a dislocated hip and is doing darn well now!].

This was her second "disaster averted," as she is also a Hurricane Katrina rescue.

Molly's miracles have been aided by extraordinary humans here in Santa Barbara and New Orleans, and we thank them. We have met some of her Santa Barbara heroes during our walks on the beach, and within the comments on Edhat!

Through email correspondence, we've learned about the humans who rescued her from the streets of St. Bernard's Parish and those at "Camp Lucky" where she was taken, outside New Orleans. Molly flew on a plane with 100 other rescues to the Los Angeles SPCA and that journey continued to the superb Ventura County Humane Society in Ojai, California, from where we adopted her.

After that trauma, and six months in a kennel, it was not easy for her to be a pet again, at first. Although housebroken, she did not know how to eat out of bowl, walk on a leash, be calm inside a house, or enjoy treats (she buried everything given to her). She was terrified of fire (fireplace, candles, stove), slept in corners of closets, and was a very reluctant "trainee" at obedience classes. It was clear she didn't trust us.

Her calm and trust developed...very slowly. No problem, as she is well worth and deserving of all accommodation, treats, training, patience and love given her. She is an extraordinarily good pal, curious, goofy, loving and devoted. And, apparently, quite miraculous.
