The Shoal's restaurant at the Cliff House makes a very tasty one. The rest of the menu is pretty lack luster but they do make the best cioppino I've encountered in SB. Packed full of a variety or fresh seafood and you get to enjoy it in as ocean front setting as you can be in SB, it's an excellent choice on a nice day!

Brophy's cioppino used to be good, but I think many of their menu items have gone downhill lately.

Brophey Bros is a favorite of our out of town visitors. Marmalade Cafe also makes a good spicy one. But my father always thought that mine was the best :)

As one who grew up in a seafood eating Italian family, I can tell you that Brophy's was mediocre at it's best. I've not found an exceptional cioppino in my 18 years in SB, but I can't say I've tried many. I am motivated by this referral thread to go out and try some of the suggested restaurants.

Don't confuse cioppino with boulliabaise -- one is spicy and the other has a saffron base.

I'm partial to Brophy's cioppino with a few splashes of Tobasco sauce for that extra kick in the pants.

Marmalade's is the only one I've tried locally and I really enjoyed it. Fresh seafood and the garlic bread "toast points" on the side were great to soak up the broth. They generally have a "buy 1 get one 1/2 off" deal in the Clipper mailer too.

Interestingly, The Shoals description of their cioppino states it has saffron in it; I'm very interested, but like I stated earlier, scared to try and turn left to get outta there, especially with a post-cioppino/bread food-coma. And, I might add; a good cioppino must side with amazing bread or it's worthless!

Hollister Brewery... way out in Goleta -- it's new on the menu (the beers ain't bad either -- just don't drink all my Hippie Kicker!!!). A hearty fish stew with fennel, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, chickpeas, local mussels, rock cod and shrimp served with toasted ciabatta and aioli.....14

for the left-turn-o-phobes dining at the Shoals: don't do that turn! Instead, turn right (carefully) and go south about half a mile or less; get off at the next exit (Seaside? or something like that) and go under the freeway, take a quick left and get back on 101 at the northbound ramp ... 5 minutes' extra time, lots of extra safety. PS: Shoals dining is worth every extra minute!

Well I have been looking for the best, but to date the Diana Shores recipe is the best so far, only Brothy's serv. that recipe in town. I have made it and is good. I do like the Boathouse or Chase on State St.

Santa Barbara Shelfish Co at the very end of the wharf. It is the best. Fresh seafood. Perfectly spiced and huge portions. Also love the Fish House. Think they are owned by the same people. Plus: ocean views and free and easy parking for both locations.
