Solo Gardener
updated: Aug 03, 2011, 8:03 AM

Locals seeking experienced gardeners, not mow-and-blow types. How about someone who knows plants, has experience in pruning, planting and irrigation and actually enjoys a garden? Oh, and works alone without a crew.

Are we dreaming?

That's me exactly!! I've owned an organic landscaping business for the past 31 years and work alone or with 2 wonderful guys. I'd love to talk to you. Diane

NO, but in general this type of work requires a knowledge Arborist and Horticulturists. People are too cheap or clueless to value this type of work and service. You see fruit trees all over town that are half dead or never been pruned correctly and are really in need of major help. You would think that people would want to take care of a producing tree. The other glaring issue you see is plant with opposite needs right next to each other or plants too crowded together even at a young age. It is not worth hiring mow and blow crews for anything other than mowing and cleaning. They will kill anything they get their hands on. Keep it simple, go Native and keep a place to grow food it will lower your bills in two ways.

Josie, this is Dan. Thanks so much for the support, you are very kind.

I've been working as a gardener in SB since 1988 at San Ysidro Ranch. Then the Biltmore, and yes, ten years at El Encanto.

Honestly, I would go with the others mentioned. (Except Spencer, that's like me saying I'll play your wedding reception.) ;)

I know a guy who would be perfect. His name is Day Thompson. He managed the grounds at El Encanto Hotel from 1980-1989. He knows all about horticulture and all aspects of gardening. He works solo and has lots of tools and equipment for this type of work. I am happy to put you in touch w/him if you like.

all I can say is be prepared to pay for the expertise if you are really serious. What do you pay a plumber or electrician per hour?

581, Diane has been my gardener for years. She is great and also organic.

Not dreaming. My gardener is a true plant lover: try shangri-la-gardens dot com (had to write out the dot com because edhat won't let me post links)

I'm looking for some help like this as well. I also have steep slopes that require some care working on them or they erode. I would also love some ideas for how to make them a little more stable as well. And while I know that there would be some expense to do that, I can't afford a major design project.
