Looking for a few specific recommendations on where people like to go for acupuncture treatment. Interested to read feedback from those who've experienced it, especially for pain relief; and what they thought about it. I've never tried it, but I've read such great things about it over the years. In my case, it would be for pain in the neck, on one side (yes, I've been to my family physician). Thanks!

Anthony F. Kar in SB. I had never tried it until this last year - Anthony was amazing, professional and extremely thorugh. I was somewhat skeptic at first.....but it is truly amazing. I was treated for pain & numbing in my hands, arms & neck area.

The efficacy of acupuncture has been carefully measured and is almost exactly equal to the efficacy of a placebo. Save your money. It's all in your mind.

385p, let others make up their minds for themselves, please. I love Dr. Kathleen Zisser. She's a real MD and has a very healthy respect for both Western and Eastern medicine as well as just the basic fundamental process of how the mind heals the body. She's really great and probably the best all around perspective and background in town.

Mary Scaran who shares Anthony Kar's office is great! If it was all in your mind why would China have the largest population of any country? Wouldn't Chinese medicine have wiped everyone out? Why does the US have such a low life expectancy rate when the cost per capita spent on healthcare is several factors greater than any other country in the world? Look up the data. Chinese medicine has been tested and refined over thousands of years. Our medicine has been around for about one hundred years and I don't wish to be a guinea pig (I use Western medicine as a last resort).

Can everyone posting names post approximate pricing, too? I saw on the DCA site that they do a sliding scale from $25-$45. Are the others similar? (I expect private offices to be around twice that, but the clinics?)

385P: I've heard exactly the opposite. It works on horses and other domesticated animals, so it's kind of hard to claim that it's all in your mind. Besides which, isn't pain "all in your mind?" Massage, chiropractic, & acupuncture all show higher patience relief from chronic pain than western medicine. I think your skepticism is directly 180 wrong. BTW, I haven't had acupuncture, but I have had significant relief from serious migraines with a combination of massage, chiropractic, and triptan meds. Whatever works.

@199409P 199385P provided factual information; don't try to shut that down, please. @199535P There's a big difference between hearing things and controlled studies. As for horses, what does it mean to say that it works? And as for skepticism, it's virtually a synonym for intelligence ... we should all be skeptical of claims one way or the other.

I've seen Daijing Wang at Goleta Acupuncture several times and she's wonderful. The treatments work better on some ailments than others, but western doctors can't fix everything and that's where eastern medicine can be of great value. There's more info on her website - some health plans may cover part of the costs, but regardless they're very reasonable: www.goletaacupuncture.com/

Our family has worked with Laurie Counihan Childs for years. She does acupuncture and homeopathy. Like good doctors, she does an initial full medical workup and then treatments. Most insurance companies will cover acupuncture for pain after you submit receipts. Laurie's number (805) 682-0123, 1715 Pampas. Laurie was also a founding member of SB Charter School and is well respected in the SB community. As for pain control, my brother was foreman on a job site and someone dropped drywall on his head from a 2nd story. It pulled the nerves out of his neck. He lived in severe pain for 7 years before he finally listened to me and went to an acupuncturist. It relieved his pain and he returns when needed.

Mark Ruskin freed me from debilitating, long-term postherpetic neuralgia pain in my leg in 3 treatments. That was my first time to try it (at age 65). Had always been skeptical of it, but had tried every other option and was desperate. It does't matter to me if the pain was all in my mind because it went away and never returned after his treatments.

A combination of acupuncture-chiropractic-massage and an awesome fresh diet works wonders. It seems that these practitioners are in competition with each other rather than willing to work WITH each other. That's what my chiropractor mentioned. She'd love to work with an acupuncturist but they don't refer in kind.

I have been seeing Caroline White at the Holistic Health Center on East Canon Perdido for years. She has helped me through all sorts of short-term health crises and helped me recover from long-term problems, both through acupuncture and recommended supplements and herbs. She takes a lot of time with her patients, and is very ethical. Has a very calm demeanor. Good for people who have never tried acupuncture before and might be a little squeamish, she makes it easy to get started.

I highly recommend Mark Sherwood. He spends a lot of time and I never feel rushed. He also incorporates some neck and back massage as well as cupping therapy. His needling is very gentle and I have never felt any discomfort with the needles. I think the sessions are $80 or $85, and my insurance covers 50%. Acupuncture has worked well for stress reduction, neck and shoulder pain, as well as for Menopause issues.
