You may want to check with the local YMCA; they may have someone teaching fencing there, or can give you a name or two...or the athletics department at UCSB...

Check out Presidio Fencing downtown, especially if you want to learn foil or epee.

Also check out the Santa Barbara Fencing Academy that meets at the Veteran's Memorial building at West Beach. A former Olympic fencer teaches foil, épée and saber. Www dot sbfafencing dot com.

If you want chain mail with that fencing, you'll need the Society for Creative Anachronism. Seriously, though, Tim Robinson of Presidio Fencing is great!

If you're interested in light armored-style fencing (rapier) with slightly heavier swords than typical foil fencing, @283P is the right answer, the SCA. You can contact the local group at for more details: seneschal [at] sca-isles.org As a member of said group, they're extremely welcoming, and there's no fees. They even have loaner armor, and the local instructor is an award-winning fencer.
