NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK

Santa Barbara Children's Chorus
updated: Aug 06, 2011, 8:30 AM

Santa Barbara Children's Chorus is a community-based, non-denominational music education and performing organization for children ages 8-14. We provide children of the community with the opportunity for musical training and performing in a fun and challenging environment.

When was SBCC founded?

Santa Barbara Children's Chorus was founded in 1993 with the goal of supporting Santa Barbara children in all aspects of vocal training. SBCC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

What are SBCC's goals and objectives?

With the continuing decline in funding for school-based music programs, especially in the elementary and secondary school levels, SBCC is dedicated to filling a vital gap in bringing the benefits of music and vocal performance to children.

We believe that through music and performance:

Children gain confidence in their abilities as individuals They experience and gain appreciation for harmoniously working ?together as a group Spirits are uplifted with the joy of music and music appreciation - both as members of the chorus and, by extension, the community Through singing, we can nullify the diversities in individuals and society by bringing together children from all walks of life with a common purpose - to sing!

What is offered?

Our program is designed to promote and nurture enthusiasm in all aspects of vocal training. To accomplish this, all chorus members are expected to participate in class time devoted to music theory, sight reading and ear training, as well as learning songs to be performed at the end of each term, both individually and in a group.

We are a goal-oriented organization and the children who sing with the chorus for more than one term will continue to work on more advanced theory and choral work.

Who can participate?

SBCC is open to all children ages 8-14 (3rd through 8th grades). We are an "inclusive" organization that provides a space in its program for any child who wishes to participate.

How often are class sessions?

Sessions are 13 weeks in duration, with new sessions starting in Fall and Winter/Spring. Special Summer sessions may also be available in the future. Classes meet once a week for 2-1/2 hours. Class dates and times may vary per session and number of students.

What is the cost of each session?

The cost for each 13-week session is $399 and includes all music and instruction materials. Note: This price does not include show tickets, costumes or other performance requirements.

Are scholarships available? Yes. Partial scholarships are available for each session. Applications are reviewed and scholarships are awarded based on greatest need.

Can I make a donation to SBCC? Yes! All donations will be applied to support our scholarship program and to reduce overall fees for our program.

Upcoming Fall Session

Registration and auditions for our Fall session will take place on Saturday, August 20 from 11 am - 1 pm at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara, 1535 Santa Barbara Street.

Our Fall session begins on Monday, August 29. Register by August 15 and receive a 10% discount off our full tuition price! A limited number of partial scholarships are available.
