Macs Fish & Chips? He is a classically trained chef and does all his food from scratch. Don't know if he has any Shepard's Pie, but he does have other standard English fare, other than fish & chips, and it's all excellent!

Easy to make. Secret ingredient is sherry.

Try making it yourself but use ground lamb, not beef. Shepherds herd sheep now cows. Also add rubbed sage and Worcestershire sauce.

The Brewhouse one is ace! Dargan's is pretty good too. Those two are your best bet.

I had an excellent shepherd's pie at Hollister Brew Co. on St. Patrick's Day, although I'm not sure if this was just a special item for that day only or if you could request it?

Cottage Pie is the beef version of Shepherd's Pie, but many people are thinking of a beef version when they say Shepherd's.

I believe I've seen it on Mac's menu but since I don't eat red meat I've only enjoyed their fish and chips. Family has enjoyed Dargan's as well though it has been a few years.

I've not found a shepherd's pie anywhere, only the Cottage pies made with beef and erroneously labelled on the menu. Maybe Mac's does a proper one; he is after all from Blackpool and know's a real sheep when he sees one. The other problem would be that grass fed sheep (ala UK, NZ and Australia), taste nothing like the corn fed sheep found here. So I'm not so sure a shepherds pie here would taste as good anyway. But nothing wrong with a good Cottage pie and Dargan's does a good one. Love their steak and Guinness pie too ... yum!

@KEEFY Brewhouse makes theirs with Lamb.

The term "shepherd's pie" did not appear until the 1870s, and since then it has been used synonymously with "cottage pie", regardless of whether the principal ingredient was beef or mutton. There is now a popular tendency for "shepherd's pie" to be used when the meat is mutton or lamb, with the suggested origin being that shepherds are concerned with sheep and not cattle. This may, however, be an example of folk etymology.

The one that Trader Joe's sells is as good as any I have had. It's a big meal. I think it's $4.

I think Dargan's version is "meh", bland. I've had a "Shepherd's pie" at Mac's that was tiny but incredibly tasty. I think he gets all his pies made elsewhere, however? I don't see the pie listed on Hollister Brew Co's menu, as another commenter posted, which is a shame - I'd like to have tried it. I really like the food at Hollister.

Simply Pies on Hollister at Patterson, across from GV Cottage Hospital, has a local grass-fed beef Pot Pie that I'll bet would fill the bill -- it's not topped with potatoes of course, but I'll take it anyway!
