Local Art
updated: Jul 27, 2011, 6:46 AM

I have a blank wall that screams for a original painting or limited edition print. Where's the best place in town to find something from up and coming local artists or great local artists in general? I need something large with red/burgundy and/or earth tones. Landscapes or abstracts...

Sunday art walk on the waterfront! We bought a triptych of Echinacea a couple of years ago from a gal who lives on El Sueno. She had a larger "exhibit" at the Sunday show which was where we saw her work and this piece in particular. (We've also bought coffee mugs from"terramonary" pottery, she's local too.) Good luck, hope you find something, and have fun!

Try the Santa Barbara Art Association's gallery, Gallery 113 in La Arcada court. Lots of local art at reasonable prices. I would call before going, as they are staffed be volunteers...965-6611.

The exhibits change monthly, so keep trying.

If you're serious about serious art and understand that acquiring art is as much about the process as the goal, check out the SB County Arts Commission's past exhibition catalogs that would feature a large portion of the best of local art. You can find SBCAC contact information on the County's website.

If you know what you're looking for:
Go to Gary Chafe's website. He's a longtime artist and has been around, knows a lot of excellent local artists and is a gem.

Also contact art teachers at SBCC. They are/know lots of artists.

If you like landscapes try Arturo Tello's gallery in Carp on Palm St.

Why not have Peg Quinn paint a mural on your blank wall. It will end up happy, not screaming.

If you have a large space, James Seibert does 6' abstract paintings and is usually found on the Sunday Art Walk, as is Leigh Sparks who is on Etsy, eBay and has a shop in Carpinteria. You can Google both.

I've also found some great vintage art by just using the search term "Santa Barbara painting" on eBay.

Local artists will be featured at Old Mission Santa Barbara on Sunday, Sept. 4, when the annual Mission Art Show will resume after an absence of several years. Two dozen Santa Barbara artists, including a friend of mine, were given access to areas of the mission grounds which have not been open to the general public.

Look up the upcoming "one night stand" event at Art from Scrap. Local artists - new and well known, have donated small works for a "blind" showing. All works will sell for $200, and the maker will be revealed after purchase! There is a great chance you may take home a piece that is worth far more than the $200 price tag.

Santa Barbara Studio Artists will have their studios open the last weekend in August (Aug.27&28). There will be a reception at Santa Barbara Frame Shop & Gallery on Aug. 26, 5-8pm (1324 State, Suite J - Arlington Plaza), so you can check out who you might want to see.

Also, if you like non-objective work, you might check out the show at the Casa Magazine Gallery (only on through tomorrow!), 23 E. Canon Perdido. There is one huge painting with alot of burgundy and earthtones. The artist is Tom Post, a local guy.

You might want to consider looking and learning about contemporary art for a while before purchasing. If you consider buying art as an investment (something you can have for a lifetime and beyond), your approach may change from `let's go out and buy a painting' to `let's start looking around and find a work of art to begin a collection'.. You may want to consider buying a number of small pieces for your wall that you can collect slowly or, as stated, one paining. But, take you time and enjoy the process: go to the First Thursday exhibits and talk to the local artists who can steer you to other local artists. There is a wealth of undiscovered treasure out there. Happy hunting!
