Selling Gold Jewelry
updated: Jul 25, 2011, 1:04 PM

Has anyone had any luck selling old or scrap gold jewelry in town? I am trying to find somewhere to sell that is not a rip-off.

Went to the people who set up shop at Fess Parker a few times last year. They seemed reasonable/fair, but my sense is that some buyers give a better deal than others although in theory, it's all determined by price of gold per ounce on a given day. I have heard that the guy on upper State (Paul Brombal) is OK but have never dealt w him other than buying some foreign currency.

I sold some broken pieces at Gillio's last year. I thought it was very fair. They show you right there how they calculate the worth.

The guy that owns the shop by Jeanine's Bakery. (I wish I could remember the name of his store, I am sorry!) On State street, he has to buzz you in...just down a few stores from Jeanine's. I have gone there, and sold my silver many times, and always found him fair. (Ocean side of the street.) The coin store. I wish I could be more helpful with the name of the store!

413..that's Gillio's. I took my stuff there including (embarrassing) a gold tooth. Got great prices. I priced it elsewhere and was given an estimate of nearly $32 LESS than what Gillio gave me. Very fair.

Midwest refineries (google it) is very fair and where the goldbugs sell their scrap. Of course you have to mail it in to them and the insurance on mailing costs extra but If you have much it would be worth it

413... That is Paul Brombal.. After seeing what 415 answered, I would question Gillio's.. Always get at least two quotes!

It's important to note that gold has hit a record high as of this week and while it wasn't selling well a few years ago, it's getting pretty expensive at the moment. ANY person you go to will try to pay you as little as possible and they almost always say gold isn't selling high like it used to. Their job is to get you to part with your gold for as little as it can cost them, so please hold out and know that it's higher now than it's ever been.

I've sold coins at Gillio's and did my research first... They give a good price. I also tried selling some coins at Brombals on upper State street near Jeanine's and they wouldn't give me a fair price, so I walked out. An ounce of gold, is worth an ounce of gold.... no matter if there is a scratch on a "non-collectible" coin. They actually were gonna knock off over $200 cuz of a tiny scratch.... That same coin was taken to Gillio's who gave me the value of gold....

It appears you are trying to sell gold and not coins. So take it to Patco Jewlers at 316 East Haley. He is very honest. I have dealt with Pat for years.

I like Peggy's Treasures in Carp. Very casual atmosphere and I felt comfortable doing business in there. Not much pressure at all.

I went to Gillio's to sell scrap gold. I asked for an itemized bill and was told they don't have time to do things like that. In the scrap were two rings of my mother's with very small diamonds and saphires. When I got home I realized I went to sell the gold but forgot to ask for the stones back. They wouldn't give them to me. On the one hand, this was my fault as I did accept their payment. On the other, I never saw them evaluating the stones, only testing the gold, so I guess they got a freeby.

Do they ask for your SS# and issue a 1099 if it's over 600?

I took my scrap to Gillio's and they went through each piece with me telling me which was 14K, 18K etc. When I took it elsewhere in SB they evaluated it all the same and the price they appraised it at was much lower. Gillios gave me a fair deal and explained everything.

658P If you're selling SCRAP it kind of implies that it is scrap to you. Unless you make a point of telling any jeweler that you're actually interested in the stones, they'll likely just get rid of them.

What every you decide do not use the company Ospriy the people that show up at the Doubletree and other hotels ~

I have some scrap gold, 14K gold jewelry, some black hills rings (3) and some precious stones one is a tanzanite ~ The man tried to rip me off! Seriously tried to put another stone in it's place, I asked him why is this other stone here with my stuff, I did not bring this ~ some cheap thing, He acted as if trying to pull something, They are Bad News and are a Rip- Off. I did report him. And for the gold wanted to offer me $45 for everything.

I took a huge gold ring (last week) to both Brombal's and Patco. Brombals gave me over $600 where Patco only offered $300. Brombals said it was 14K, Patco said it was only 10K. Definitely shop around.

Armando at Peggy's Used Treasures is great to work with. For a small store they're always busy so that must be a good sign. Seems like most people in Carpinteria go there.

REALITY selling jewelry/coin - Both Brombal & Gillio fair. No one pays on tiny stones- colored or diamonds. no money in them. You can pull them - if you ask to pull expect fee MIGHT get more for diamonds 1/4 carat + & some color stones if 1carat +. LOTS of gold is underkarated. . NEVER a great price at hotels. THINK! They pay for rooms wages food & travel They take advantage & run! DON'T expect itemized prices - Maybe for a couple of pieces but not if you have a lot. Too time consuming! GUIDELINE= if piece cost $500 expect 10-15% Retail establishments charge UP TO 800% mark up! BEST $= sell privately but you do all the work & assume the risk MAYBE 50% If it's a sought after piece. Coin-up to 90% Never full market . Choice is yours. I bought for 21+years. Now you know.
