Buying a Kayak
updated: Jul 24, 2011, 1:43 PM
Even though this summer hasn't been the sunniest, I'd like to get into kayaking. Wheres a good spot in town to buy a cheep one?
A single seat kayak would be best, thanks.

Craigslist would be a good place, but I'm not sure they're rated by the sounds of bird chicks.

craigslist! I think the cheapest place to rent is the sailing center at the harbor- $10/hr.

Cheep? Not sure. Cheap. Try Play it Again on Turnpike and Hollister.

It is $5/hr at the Channel island nat'l park office, (or whatever it's called). It's on the dock closest to west beach, and this is for hollow plastic sea kayaks that you sit on top of wearing swimming clothes.

Go to an REI garage sale.. closest might be Northridge? They can be 1/2 even 2/3 cheaper than the brand new price. You can trst that REI has checked them out thoroughly and you won't be buying something that'll sink or somehow make things more interesting than you want.

You indicate you want to buy one. I have known several people who bought one only to use it infrequently. After the initial glamor wears off many people just have them sitting around collecting dust and taking up a lot of room. I'd urge you to rent first for several times to make sure you really like it before buying.
