Dog Agility Training
updated: Jul 19, 2011, 11:42 AM
I got a new dog from the shelter a couple of weeks ago -- I think she'd be great at agility or fly ball. Are there clubs around where I could have her evaluated or introduced to the equipment to see if it's for her?

K-9 PALS at the shelter does agility with their dogs - you can ask them. I have seen flyball at community evernts where the shelter has been a participant. Sorry I don't know of any direct links, but the shelter has always been super helpful to me - stop by one day to chat & get some info from a volunteer.

The two main clubs in town are the the Santa Barbara Flyers and the Goleta Valley Dog Club. My 7-year-old rescue mutt and I just completed a great class with Anne Swan called Fun With Focus, taught through the GVDC at Girsh Park behind Costco. We might try an agility class in the fall. Info about both clubs is available on the Internet. There's also the Santa Barbara Supersonic Flyball Racing Team, also on the Internet.

both SB Flyers (yes they are at Mackenzie almost every Sunday a.m.) and Goleta Valley are great clubs. Anne is an amazing instructor, as are Karen and Janet who teach for SB Flyers. Try one or both!

The SB Supersonic flyball team practices at 6 PM Monday evenings at Girsh Park. You can email info@sbsupersonic.org or just take your dog by to check them out. http://sbsupersonic.org/ Goleta Valley Dog Club has all kinds of other dog training. Check out their web site or go by and watch. Their calendar is the best way to see what is going on and when. You can contact the instructor via email. http://www.goletavalleydogclub.org/calendar/ Both these groups have really nice instructors and members that will make you and your dog feel welcome.

I wish the flyball team would come back at half time at UCSB women's basketball games. I don't think they came once last year and they are really entertaining.

Just a heads up about a fun event called "Wag's & Whisker's" coming up on August 29th from 11-4 at Grisch Park in Goleta (behind the Home Depot). Many different local shelters will be represented, as well as community education. It is sponsered by C.A.R.E 4 Paws. Put it on you calendar!! The fly ball dogs were there last year and it was the highlight of the day!!

Santa Barbara Supersonic will be at Wags & Whiskers again this year and you can check out our demos page for other dates: www.sbsupersonic.org/demos_tournaments.html You just missed our local annual tournament, but we'll have another one next summer if you want to see actual competition. @SBJULES, we'd love to demo at UCSB again if anyone has contact information...
