Old TV Sets
updated: Jul 11, 2011, 3:59 PM

Does anyone know how we can dispose of two old TV sets, not the flat-panel kind, that work just fine and are too heavy for us to lift into our car and take to a recycling center? Apparently thrift shops do not want them.

If you don't mind dealing with Craigslist, you could advertise them in the Free section and have people pick them up.

Go to sbrecycle dot com. I think you can schedule pick ups and they charge very reasonable fees.

"MarBorg will accept your TVs and computer monitors free of charge at our recycling facility located at 119 N. Quarantina Street."

Now just find a friend or two who have access to a truck and are willing to help, or pay someone a small fee to help you.

I posted a color TV with remote on Craigslist free section and had 3 email responses within one hour. When the price is right, it won't last long.

Wrap them in plastic grocery bags and place them on your porch.

The Elves Of Moral Righteousness will descend upon your home during the night and ferry the evil things away.

Problem solved.

To all you irresponsible people advocating shooting them at the free range on East Camino Cielo, you're the reason the free range will be closed some day. Pick up your own trash! Don't you dare leave it for others to dispose of.

These people are jerks and need to be called out publicly. I'm a shooter and an environmentalist, and I'm appalled by those who abuse the free range by shooting appliances or other large junk and leaving it for others to deal with. Shooters need to go the extra mile in being courteous and considerate to avoid creating or reinforcing any negative perceptions anti-shooting folks already have of us.

Environmentalist and shooter? Not being sarcastic, serious question: do your bullets not have lead, or if they do, how do you clean them up?

Please do the right thing and recycle them. Please don't trash them, there are components in them that are not good for the environment. If you can't find someone to take them to use, call the recycle place. If you feel you have to shoot something at the free range, shoot a paper target and take it home with you again. Litter of all kinds sucks and is ugly. Thank you.

Cleaning up shells, casings, paper targets and remnants of clay pigeons at a shooting range is one thing (and yes, there is ammo without lead) and hauling off TVs, appliances and other junk is something else entirely. Target shooting and trap shooting can be a fun and safe sport that is not inconsistent with protecting the environment. No different than campers and others that leave their trash behind.

I've donated old but functioning TVs to the Salvation Army. They'll haul them away for free and leave you with a receipt so that you can get the tax write-off come April 15. Free money!

Freecycle! It's a yahoo group dedicated to giving stuff away to local people who need it. Sorry most of the posters didn't get that you can't lift these big TVs, let the freecyclers know they have to lift them.

I had a brand new Mitsubishi 65 inch TV under warranty replaced by Mitsubishi. I had to get rid of the first one. After many indulgent moments of dreaming of taking it to Glass Mountain and filming the the event, I realized that there are many unknowns in that TV that would be hazardous. The TV now lives in Santa Monica. Still has pink lines that appear at warm up, but the new owner (it was free to him) is very happy with it. Give it away and let it not end up on Glass mountain.

Need to have sandstone floors refinised , polished and sealed, and want to know if anyone can suggest someone
who really knows what they are doing and does not charge a fortune.

NANNY NOTE: We will create a new referral thread for you. Please do not respond to this here.

Craig's List "free" section. I put our old television on CL with a photo and got 4 or 5 emails within a couple of hours. I gave it to the first appreciative person who responded and could pick it up before noon. He was thrilled. I was happy to see the big thing go to a good home and not the landfill. Win-win.

I am the OP. I am appalled at the comments about taking the TVs to a shooting range. That is so far off the subject and totally unhelpful. Re Salvation Army, the thrift store on Milpas closed quite a while ago and their phone number has been disconnected. Sbrecycle will charge us $50 per set to take them away. And thank you to 869 for pointing out that one of our problems is that these sets are too heavy for us to lift--out to the street, into our car, anywhere. So I will try Craig's list, either free or very minimal cost, and stress that they have to come and get these darn things.

Yes, everybody, please keep your glass to yourself, intact, until you can recycle or pass along to an appreciative (heck, even surly) recipient.

We will never be able to go barefoot in our yard, or even thoughtlessly kneel to go after a weed without a high risk of being punctured by broken glass. Disclosure was apparently not required, so after we signed papers it was "Oh, BTW, this lot seems to have been used as the neighborhood dump for years; it's glass from one end to the other." (Plus crockery but nothing valuable)

So we collect it and soon it will go into the tumbler to be turned into beach glass to replace a collection that was deemed "not worth moving."

::sigh::

If you believe in a woman's right to have an abortion don't donate to or purchase from United Family thrift store in the Magnolia Center. The last time I was in there they were showing an anti-abortion video. I suspect they are raising money for their cause. They keep calling me for donations and promise to take my name off their calling list, but they never do.
