Vintage-looking Tile Sources
updated: Jul 10, 2011, 6:45 AM

I'm re-doing my little 1930 San Roque cottage fireplace hearth and mantel. I'd like it to achieve a vintage look, but I also want it to be an eye-catching focal point for the home. It is VERY boring right now. I'm looking for suggestions on vintage-looking tile sources, as well as design ideas.

Should I look for reclaimed tiles? What new tile vendors in town or online have you had good luck with? What is the best way to study design and layout ideas so my fireplace looks compatible with the character of a historic house? Is it OK to go for a Spanish Revival look in an English cottage?

All thoughts are welcome.

If you like the "malibu tile" look (you can probably search it online, like at the Adamson House in Malibu), RTK Studio in Ojai makes really nice tile, circa 1930's. Their tile is expensive, so it is best used for borders and focal points, when mixed with other, less expensive tile. You can probably find RTK Studios online, too.

There is an awesome ceramics company in Ojai, I have seen their work on several home tours down there. I don't remember the name but if you call the chamber of commerce I am sure they will know. Their stuff is absolutely AMAZING. Works of art! Good luck!

Tres Feltman is a tile designer in SLO--co-owner of Hands Gallery. He has done some beautiful tiles (see Avila Beach boardwalk) and might have some to sell. Just a few, say set into the corners, might do the trick. That was the style then, anyway. He has a studio near Trader Joe's on So. Higuera.

(would you share your find, once incorporated?)

RTK in Ojai. They designed my kitchen floor. It's stunning. They are across from that really great outdoor/indoor bookstore in Ojai. By appointment only these days tho, I think.

Most English cottage style fireplaces were either brick or natural stone, but you could use something like slate, that might be the look you want. Should try Tileco on Olive street, they have a pretty large showroom with lots of vintage reproduction tiles.

I agree with the RTK comments- beautiful hand crafted tile.

There is a much less expensive company that we have used called Kibak tile out of Oregon which is still very very nice!
