I have company for the Fourth and they want big juicy BBQ beef ribs and/or chicken for lunch and we don't want to cook 'em up ourselves. They are thinking of something sort side-of-the-road style, like they have in SLO and Cambria. I can only think of Woody's and I don't recall them grilling outside. Any ideas for easy pleasin' BBQ tomorrow?

Woody's BBQ is awful. Anytime meat is super salty, as it is at Woodys, you automatically know they were using cheap meat and trying to cover it up with salt (a flavor enhancer).

Unfortunately, there IS no decent BBQ in our area except for Killer B's on State Street, which is pretty pricey. Agree with the advice to stay away from Woody's. Woody's is an exercise in how much sauce they can slather on to cover the overdone, truly terrible meat. Woody's is FELONY awful, and the only reason it keeps "winning" the BBQ category in the local "Best Of" competitions is because It's the only BBQ game in town. Sad, really.

Do any of the Mexican markets do prepared meats? Their prices are usually lower than specialty places. Convince them to do a big taco fest with carnitas (aka pulled pork) and roast chicken? grab an onion, head of cabbage, and some cilantro and salsa= easy pleasin'.

Pollofino's out by Kmart. Best ribs EVER.....they have really good chicken too. Little bit of a drive but well worth it. I wish they would come closer to Santa Barbara.

Why doesn't Santa Barbara have a great BBQ place and a great Kosher Deli? What ever happened to the BBQ in Santa Maria Fri/Sat/Sun. Sponsored by a Christian Church group and operated out of a converted bus in JC Penny's parking lot? Have not had such good ribs since they left. Maybe someone knows what happened to them or if they might be located elsewhere in Santa Maria. Well woth the drive!

I vote a huge NO for Woodys... The rib meat looks raw and not tender.

A) How many people are we talking about serving here? B) Are you referring to the 'side-of-the-road style' BBQ's in the Santa Maria area (I don't know of any in SLO or Cambria) or a restaurant that grilles there food outdoors? C) Today being the 4th of July there will be some businesses closed - including restaurants. In the future perhaps you should plan ahead for events like this, especially on major US holidays. Country Catering in Goleta would have been ideal for your situation. From small groups to large events Country Catering consistent with there food, service, etc. As for a last minute BBQ for take out as other people have suggested, I would say Chicken Ranch would be able to fulfill your needs. I have heard good things about Pollofino's and the BBQ place at Santa Claus Ln. Woody's... agreed, NEGATORY! Good luck for today and best of luck on planning ahead next time around and enjoying Country Catering. Happy 4th of July my friend!

Cantwell's in Summerland puts out a big outdoor grill and cooks up BBQ like you are looking for. call them to ask which days they do it. I agree with recommendation of SB Chicken Ranch for BBQ chicken or tri-tip.

So easy to do yourself. Salt and pepper a rack of beef ribs and do it under the broiler about an inch away from the flame or element. About 8 min. on the bone side, then about 5 on the other side. There, they're done.

Really good tender BBQ is a long slow-cook process. The place on Santa Claus Lane is very good. Please don't go to Woody's. We have given them so many chances over many years and it is always really bad :( We have had a few good BBQ places in town but not enough people support them to keep them open.

Super Cucas on the Westside will set you up with all the fixings (beans, salsa, tortilla, onion, avocado, plates, forks, etc. etc.) and all you have to do is cook their pre-marinated chicken or carne asada. Meat is thin sliced so it cooks in minutes on you bbq whenever your ready. Friends did it for a birthday and we've all copied since. Extremely reasonable prices and feeds a ton of people. Place your order and enjoy a Negra Modelo while they get things ready. As good as it gets.

The bus from Valley Christrian School was done in by the new regulations on temporary food locations. They were oversized and sold more days than allowed. The new regs are very strict and require a trained food handler and many other regs and can only operate a few times a year. However the Filipino BBQ in front of Pep Boys in Santa Maria met all regulations and got proper permits. It is there and Sat and Sun weather permitting and has wonderful tri tip dinners or sandwichs, shishkbobs, chicken plain or as a dinner, and great adobo dinners. They are also very reasonably priced. I eat there every Saturday!!!

The BBQ Company at Santa Claus Lane is very good. Excellent sides and a choice of six different sauces. I love the hush puppies and fried okra with ribs.

The Barbecue Company on Santa Claus Lane is the only good cue around. I am a southerner and know my stuff, the owner is also from the south.
