Weight Loss Camp
updated: Jul 01, 2011, 6:37 AM
I'm interested in any experiences, from the "biggest loser" style to more yoga/nutritionist-oriented. I need to lose substantial weight but am actually very fit 40-something male, can run a 5k, bench press 400, have done lots of stairs, surfing, ocean swimming, triathlons etc. I have bad eating habits and know all the healthy ways to eat but have zero discipline. I don't eat fast food or obviously bad stuff, like candy, but portions and eating out certainly get me.
I've heard of places where people go for months until they completely adopted a new lifestyle but I have a family and can't do that. I'd love to hear about a local place where I could go for a week and then perhaps go back for a couple of days every month or so to stay on track.
I'm only interested in hearing about actual programs not anyone's weight loss advice per se.

The Oaks at Ojai is just the ticket! I did a few days up there and they also offer day passes. Their programs are wonderful and reasonable. Sheila Cluff has been running it for decades.

I've heard of that program and it sounds very solid buttheir website that it is mostly women. It doesn't seem like a good fit for a very active 40yo male.

Check out these folks: link They used to work out at my gym in/near SLC Utah but moved down to Southern Utah recently. I saw them train their clients and witnessed amazing results of several of their clients. They are similar to a biggest loser program.

While the Oaks at Ojai is attended mostly by women, they do have programs designed specifically for men.

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law SWEAR by Pritikin. They go to the one in Florida but i think there are others. He lost probably 50+ pounds and keeps it off, she goes there a week a month to maintain her loss.

What about just trying one of those programs that sends you all of your meals for a month or two, or more? If you are supposed to eat nothing else, maybe you can stick to it. It doesn't really sound like you need help or motivation on the fitness front. If the meals show up at your door, you wouldn't even have to leave your family at all.

why don't you and your family look at all of your meals together to see how much you consume, and then start eating less all together. If you have food portion problems I bet your family is eating just like you, and if all of you do this together it would be much easier. My husband and I split dinner when we go out, and it is plenty of food, you don't need a fat farm you need to use common sense and adjust your life style, diets don't work, lifestyle changes do. Good luck

you could try using a rowing machine several times a week. you can pack quite a serious whole body cardio workout into a 25 minute piece on an erg. surfing's good, i hear the stand up paddle is a good exercise tool however it gets annoying when those guys sit outside the lineup and paddle into all the choice waves.

sounds like you are an "emotional eater". maybe try some yoga to still your mind and look inside yourself. listen to what's really going on. take a personal inventory. there are lots of good yoga studios all over town. works for me.
