Vintage Car Restorer
updated: Jun 30, 2011, 4:56 PM
Referral - Looking for a reputable company that retores old/vintage cars. We have
an old 60 something Chevy Suburban that we're not sure if it's worth restoring and
want a couple of opinions.

I follow collectible cars very carefully; A frame-off restoration costs at least $30K and can easily exceed $50K, depending upon the amount of labor you do (vs a restoration shop). A level 1, 100 point car is very difficult to achieve. I have a program on my iPhone for collectible cars, so I looked up a 1965 Chevy Suburban and here's the info. Fair condition - $8.5K; Good condition - $11.5K; and excellent condition $18.5K. Unless you want to lose money, I wouldn't restore your Burby.

Anvil Motor Sports does mechanical restorations on vintage classic autos at 716 Bond Avenue. Call or come by and we can talk about your project and if it's feasible.

it is not worth restoring unless 1. it has emotional attachment more than your first born. 2. you are a hedge fund manager or a dot commer or the Sultan of Brunei. 3. the first owner was Elvis Pressley, JFK or the Queen of England

I have had several VERY positive dealings with Dan Carter at Anvil Motorsports. He's fair and reasonable, a really nice guy, and does excellent work. ANYONE experienced with restoration knows it's a losing proposition if you're in it for the money, but we don't all have to subscribe to the American way. If you can afford it, and have your own reasons to restore, follow your heart, my friend!

The sky's the limit with a project like that, but are you after a COMPLETE restoration?. It may not be as bad as you think or it could be a disastrous undertaking. Do you want to do some of it yourself? Take it to Anvil and/or a couple of the others and see if you can develop a plan to suit YOUR needs.

Is there a classic car group gathering in SB? They're the folks to talk to about mechanics, body workers, etc. They know the best shops, detailers, and can give much practical advice about the project should you continue. I don't see any Suburbans at local car nut gatherings, unless really cherried out for shows. Make a good surf wagon if not.

If it was a 1950's Suburban, it would be worth it; Even a 1069-1972 as they are worth the effort and $ restoring. A 1960s body style is NOT worthy as it is not popular with collectors.
