One Way Move
updated: Jun 27, 2011, 6:23 AM

The son is getting ready for a move from Chicago to Brooklyn & Dad gets to help in late July. Woot!

He has minimal furniture for a single guy, bed, desk, dresser, desk top computer, boxes, a three bikes, etc. No big screen TV, stereo sound system, etc.

Does anybody have experience with one-way truck rental firms that are the best deal, no hidden fees, caveats, and may offer discounts for AARP, AAA, etc?

We used Penske to move from Buellton to Ohio, Ohio to New Mexico, and New Mexico back to Santa Barbara and they seemed to be the most reasonably priced, no hidden fees, and had reliable trucks. My husband searched online.

I used Penske, they have nice trucks, there are no hidden fees and they are reasonable. I will never use U-Haul again or maybe it is just the one here but their trucks are awful, customer service bad....

My friend paid $ 179. for a 16' (?) UHaul truck one way to Monterey. It seems like a good deal to me.

I used Penske twice for moving my dad from Washington to SB, and drove a U-Haul (same size) once from SB to Sac moving daughter and son-in-law. Not sure about relative cost, although I did research prices when I was paying, but both Penskes were by far the most reliable, comfortable, and easy to drive.

Penske has the cleanest and reliable trucks. Moved from Santa Barbara last year and did alot of research. The Penske truck was very clean and the customer service was great. Read many bad reviews about U-Haul prior to making the decision.

OP here - It seems Penske is winning this research project by a mile.

Thanks for all the input. EdHat rocks!
