Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care
updated: Jul 02, 2011, 8:45 AM

Nonprofit since 1908, Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care (VNHC) provides high quality, comprehensive home health, hospice, and related services necessary to promote the health and well-being of all community residents, including those unable to pay. They offer a full range of nursing and rehabilitation services that help with life's challenges, such as recovering from an illness or surgery, learning to manage a chronic disease, or providing comfort and care at the end- of-life.

In order to meet an increasing demand for quality end-of-life care in our community, VNHC recently completed construction of a new Serenity House hospice inpatient facility that will provide an environment of comfort, peace, and dignity for patients and their families. Serenity House is the culmination of six years of work, starting in 2005 when the VNHC board of directors recognized the need for more hospice beds and launched a capital campaign to raise funds for a new facility. Thanks to generous support from the community, this successful campaign allowed VNHC to build Serenity House without construction loans or debt.

The new Serenity House will offer patients and their families a residential, home-like setting in natural surroundings where they'll receive high-quality and individualized around-the-clock care from a team of specially trained doctors, nurses, medical social workers, bereavement and spiritual counselors, hospice aides, and volunteers who support emotional, spiritual, and physical needs at the end of life.

At approximately 27,300 square feet, the new inpatient facility will double the number of beds available at VNHC's current 6-bed facility, allowing more patients to enjoy a beautiful and peaceful place to live out their remaining days. Each room is equipped with a bed, comfortable chair, closet, refrigerator, bathroom, and outdoor patio - providing patients with an environment that reflects the medical nonprofit's commitment to provide independent, safe, and dignified care throughout the remainder of their lives.

VNHC understands the importance of providing more than just end-of-life care. They focus on the whole patient, including their families - offering a comprehensive approach to hospice care, which extends beyond basic pain management and counseling. With services like music therapy, aromatherapy, Reiki, guided imagery, and other integrated healing therapies, VNHC hopes to provide patients and their families with a unique and dignified end-of-life experience.

Serenity House is an important part of our community - giving people a place to volunteer their time and talents, comfort friends and family, and most importantly, provide patients the means to live out their remaining days to the fullest. Made possible by generous support from the greater Santa Barbara community, VNHC has created a world-class medical facility that sets a new standard for quality hospice care.
