House Cleaner
updated: Jun 20, 2011, 8:58 AM
I live with my elderly father in San Roque (Las Positas and State) and we are looking for a person to come in and do some basic cleaning 1-2 days a week. I prefer not to offer it to a company, but to an individual who is trustworthy and I would feel comfortable being in the house with him when I am at work. Between a full-time job and then taking care of him, I just don't have the time.
Thanks in advance for any information and/or leads.

I am sorry I don't have a suggestion, but I would urge you to pay the $40 or so and perform a background check on anyone you decide to hire. My family also prefers not to deal with the placement companies, and we have avoided disasters by taking this simple step. One of the people we thought about hiring for my Mom even had check forgery convictions! One small cheap step will protect you.

I have an excellent lady who is very trustworthy. She only comes about once a month for me. She is mature, went to high school here and does a good job for a reasonable rate. I will repost with her contact info after I check with her, or maybe she will post here. Her first name is Debbie.

Power and support to you- care taking is an immense task and your father is a lucky man to have you.

Call RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program). They might have someone to recommend. Also, get yourself a copy of the Senior Resource Directory put out by the Area Agency on Aging. It is a really good resource for all kinds of elder care issues. You can usually find a copy at the various community centers, such as the Westside Center or the Goleta Center.

My friend Lilia has about 20 experience years house cleaning in Santa Barbara. She works independently (has an S.B. business license) and has had some customers for 10+ years. I'm sure she can provide references who would speak to your particular concerns.

I posted earlier about my great housecleaner. I received clearance to post her email here for you: debl@citlink.net. She works with an elderly woman now (running errands, taking her to appointments, etc) but has some open times here and there. I highly recommend her. Good luck!

I started using Diana of Diana's Cleaning Service just before the 2012 holidays, based on glowing reviews below from the year before and I have to agree with those glowing reviews. She's meticulous and accommodating, brings her own, high quality tools/materials, works intensely but efficiently. She is more expensive than your average under-the-table worker, but she's a self-employed citizen, completely above board (carries insurance and pays taxes). I couldn't be happier. She's started a web-site, if you want more information: www.dianascleaning.com.
