Anyone know of a reliable motorcycle mechanic that does house calls? 2000 BMW 1100RT needs repair and my best option so far is to trailer it to BMW in Ventura.

This doesn't address your immediate question, but you may want to think about this. I paid the extra $$$ to get my motorcycle covered by AAA roadside service. I have this nasty habit of forgetting to turn the key off, thereby running down the battery when the always-on headlight won't turn off. If your bike won't start, the Auto Club will tow it to your shop of choice, within something like a 7-mile area. If you belong to the Auto Club, call today and add motorcycle coverage, then have your bike towed to your mechanic.

I would get the up-grade to the 100 mile tow, it's only 20 or so more dollars. I love triple AAA! You can even rescue your friends!

I got AAA to come winch my freightliner out of the mud while I was at work. Of course I said it was a ford somethingorother to the dispatch. And another time when I jumped out of it to use a porta potty, ( which I usually avoided), and got locked in, with both motors still running! Gotta have triple AAA!

Triple AAA will flatbed it where ever you want. Even from home. Better get Preferred!

Can you jump start a motorcycle off another battery? Do you really get it towed, or do they get it started for you? Turn the key off!

I meant to say locked out! Locked in a porta potty, I would call 911!

Cyclewerks in Santa Maria, Steve is a great BMW guy and cheaper than BMW/VC... Cycle sport (?) Salsipuedes and Cota also works on Beemers... What is wrong? Beemers are bullet proof unless it is your final drive...

AAA well worth the $ for the piece of mind for cars & motos. We've used the lockout service a few times over the years (cars) and they even towed a Vespa to get fixed.

To 818 from 775: It is possible to jumpstart a motorcycle from another battery, but (a) you may damage or destroy your battery, because the voltage capacity or something is wrong from a regular car battery; and (b) often, the battery is nearly inaccessible, as it is with my Honda Shadow. Re: simply turning the key off, thereby negating the problem entirely: Well...yeah, of course. The problem is, sometimes in a rush, a person can simply forget to turn the key off, thereby running down the battery in QUICK order. Cars will sound an alarm at you if you do this, but bikes don't. Also, one turns a car off by turning the ignition switch; whereas on a bike, it's done with the kill switch, and the key turn-off is secondary. Trust me, it's easy to forget.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've had AAA for 30 years, will have to speak with them about towing. Cyclewerks is close enough where it should be covered.

As for dead batteries, I think every motorcyclist should learn how to do a bump start. Get the bike rolling down a hill, kick it into 2nd gear, and pop the clutch. The bike should start right up.

Jumping a bike from a car is okay, just make sure that the car is OFF when starting the bike.

996 -- I'd imagine that most bikers know how to do a bump-start. The problem is when you're already at the bottom of a hill or incline. Or even if you're on level ground and have a really heavy bike.

I didn't know you could start a motorcycle by rolling down a hill. How about a Vespa with no gears to shift? I can't for the life of me figure out how to use the kick starter.
