Hi there, Before you get taken by someone who does the Click-and-Spell version of web development, a few things to consider: 1) Decide on a budget up front. Is it worth $1000 to you? $10,000? 2) Is this part of an overall change to your branding, logo, image? Or just an update to an aging site? Do you have a look and feel you like (business cards, logo, printed materials for your company, etc), and that a developer can work from? 3) Consider getting a graphic artist separate from a developer, or using a studio/group that offers both. They are very different skills, someone good at one is rarely good at the other. 4) Know your audience - who visits your site? Why? What information do they need? Does a "fun and and energetic" site really serve them, or better information cleanly delivered?

Cautionary tale: 1.Being friends with a great web site optimizer Steve Penny, always make sure your written contract with a website developer includes "searchability". There are too many artists out there who make pretty pictures which are not searchable. 2. We have a computer business which has experienced 3 different businesses in 6 weeks whose website designers have totally screwed up the company E-Mail, Internet because they were too stupid and untrained to talk to us 1st re: what was needed on the IT side. So best bet is to meet with an optimizer 1st, insist designer coordinate with IT, insist that site is searchable. Spiders only read pictures as blank, text must be outside pictures. Some designers are too stupid to take the 10 minutes to read the Google specific instructions.

Without a doubt, the best in town in Elda Schaffield at sbwebdesigner(dot)com. She does a great job with websites and also knows all the bells and whistles too like security, forms, tracking visitors, optimizing the site to get more visitors, etc. She is brilliant. I don't know her # off-hand, but you can google sbwebdesigner and I'm sure she will have samples of her work. Did I say she's the best?

NDIC is an awesome web development company here in Santa Barbara that has been in business for over 17 years, http://www.ndic.com. As an existing customer I can't recommend them highly enough. They're strong in design, programming and SEO, with employees that specialize in each of these areas. I learned the hard way, a good designer is rarely a good programmer and vice versa... With these guys I didn't have to worry about that, the designers design, the developers do the programming and the SEO guys focus on optimizing my site and getting me higher page rankings. An experienced and professional team and a huge relief to have found them...

I would recommend that people take a look at Pacific Media Concepts here in Santa Barbara. Tyson and Ryan are good people and very knowledgeable about all things "web" including social marketing.
