Bamboo Stalks Referral
updated: Jun 15, 2011, 4:45 PM

I am looking for bamboo stalks, dried and ready to split and hang as a fence type area. Ideally, need to be about 2+ inches diameter and 4-6 feet tall.

Does anybody have any ideas where I can find them?

Someone was just recently offering them for free on Craigslist. Go there, click on free, and then type in Bamboo. Good luck.

If you have time on your hands, I know of some stands. It's very labor intensive to do this, and it generates a ton of waste. But I know of two large stands of giant timber bamboo. You would have to contact the property owner, of course. One is on the south side of the 530 block of west Victoria street, the other is on Mission Ridge & Alvarado. Both have lots of dead stalks, but again, you must get permission to cut out the dead ones.

you're looking for "Giant Timber Bamboo"

If you complete this project, it would make a nice photo essay or article for Edhat! Would you share it with us?

Dan is right, it is super labor intensive. I cut a truckload down, but by the time I got rid of all the "branches" and leaves, I was left with not a lot of usable bamboo. Now I have a partial fence. Good luck!

And it splits badly if you don't treat it.

If you are willing to cut your own, try the landowner at the NE corner Pasado and Camino Corto in Isla Vista. See link

After 6/26, the Summer Solstice Workshop will be dismantling all of the floats from this year's parade. There are lots of bamboo poles, various lengths, some green, some dry. Call the Solstice office or drop by the Workshop at Ortega and Garden. Get there as soon after the 26th as possible, as the Workshop crew will be taking EVERYTHING down as quickly as possible.
