The Pelican Surfer Theory
updated: Jun 11, 2011, 8:45 AM
By David Powdrell
Using only photographic images and visual confirmation as the tools of my quirky theory, I believe that I've stumbled upon an interesting possibility….that pelicans are, indeed, surfers from a different life and time. If nothing else, I like the concept; it makes gazing at ocean birds more interesting while waiting for the next set wave to appear on the horizon.
None of the other bird species that I've observed in my crusty old years of hanging out at the beach, the cormorants, marbled godwits, gulls, plovers and even the herons, glide with the beauty and grace using ocean wave updrafts quite like a pelican does.
Riding wave energy is an art form for the pelican, much like watching a surfer that carves his turns effortlessly.
Some pelicans appear to be making sport out of the distance covered in a single glassy wave. By gliding high on the face of a swell, they fly fast and far.
I know that the surfer/pelican relationship theory is unusual, but I like the possibility.
