Exotic Pet Vet
updated: Jun 08, 2011, 8:23 AM
My 5 year old Chinchilla and I are recent Carpinteria residents. He is in good health and I'm currently not concerned about him but the only vet I've previously taken him to is in Santa Monica. In preparation for an emergency - where's the closest "exotic" vet who would handle a Chinchilla? Thanks! :)

Call Animal Medical Clinic and talk to Dr. Scott Smith. This vet clinic is the best in the area, and Doc Smith has experience with exotics.

You should contact and introduce yourself to Dr. Otto and the staff/doctors at Carpinteria Vet clinic on Walnut and 7th (or is it 8th?) -- they've been there for eons and they're amazing.

I know Dr. Haskell in SB is the vet for BUNS, so he takes care of rabbits and reptiles. He's was our lizards vet and is our cats. 682-2556. The only emergency place in SB is CARE, which is very pricey and unfortunately just not what it use to be. I know there's a ER vet office in Ventura, which might be the same drive for you. Ugh can't think of the name, may be someone will. Thanks for being a responsible pet owner and thinking about all of this ahead!!!!!!

In case of an actual emergency when your choice of nearby exotic vet is likely to be closed, I'd also call the nearest ER vet. I only know of CARE n SB and the hospital in Ventura (please chime in if you know the name of this one, or others!). I would call both & ask questions (can they see a chin, how often do they see them, what's their exotic success rate, etc) and decide which you think sounds lie the place you want to take your critter to in the event of a 2 am emergency. Thanks for planning ahead for your little guy (or girl)! Yay for responsible pet owners!

I would avoid Dr. Otto's practice. They used to be ok, but I have had some horrible experiences there and so has a neighbor friend of mine, so I know it's not just me. I would recommend Dr. Haskell. Also, I'm pretty sure White's in SB treats chinchillas. A bit further of a drive, but better care maybe.

Dr. Rittenberg at Foothill Pet Hospital treats small animals such as your Chinchilla. Great vet with a great staff. Their number is 967-0119.

Dr. Greg Haskell would be my choice. Is a kind man that cares about the animals he cares for. Have seen him care for a parrot who was not being cooperative.

Dr Haskell at Adobe does spay and neuter and all needs for chinchillas. He is my vet for my dogs and a brilliant and kind human being.

195, Then all I can say is that I'm glad you haven't had the type of experience I did. I hope you never do.
