I have some dining room chairs that I need redone. Does anyone knows of a reputable/reasonable upholsterer in Santa Barbara? Thanks!

Good Luck! I had this same dilemma last year and ended up doing them myself because the only upholsterer I found was so unreasonable! It ended up being a fairly easy job with the help of my husband.

I don't know how good these people are, but people put their cards and/or phone numbers on a board at The Remnant Store. You could make some calls, get some prices, and ask for referrals or pictures.

I had our kitchen nook cushions remade and upholstered by Ruben Vasquez, he has a shop in Ventura....in a word, fantastic! I found him through the Remnant Store....word of caution regarding Your Remnant Store...this guy has the personality of stone and his prices are RIDICULOUS, as in gouging beyond belief. I found what I was looking for by looking through his books and then ordered online for a fraction of the cost....he was not willing to deal with me AT ALL, not even meet halfway, which still would have been very overpriced, sad, as I try to keep it local, but not for $900 more!

It depends on the quality of the work you demand. If you want it done for lowest price, there is a place at the end of Kellogg that does upholstery. If you want to spend a little more, there is a place on Hollister in old town Goleta that is pretty good.

I have recovered a few chairs before by finding durable material, even in a thrift store, and using a staple gun, after taking the chairs apart and covering them that way. Looks professional enough. Just cover the old material rather than trying to take removing it.

I took my dining room chair cushions to Renga a few years ago, and was pleased. However, I also asked if they could fix one of the chairs, and they said yes, charged me forty bucks, and it broke right away. They said it was broken in a bad place and I would have to take it to a furniture repair place. Why not say that before the forty bucks?

Upholstery Decor 5788 Hollister 964-2001 I've bought foam there over years for various projects and had some heavy material pieces sewn there. Though I haven't had upholstery done myself, there is always some work going on. I asked about upholstery once and he advised it wasn't worth what my chair was worth - in other words David was honest about the price vs. end result and I didn't end up doing it. David is the owner of the company his parents originally owned, and he grew up in the business. It's a no frills kind of place. The upholstery work I've seen there over time looks excellent.

Aquaholic is right about the Vasquez guy in Ventura. He does a precise job that lasts forever. I had him do some slipcovers for some outdated but still in great shape sofas and he really did an amazing job. It wasn't cheap, but it was cheaper than I could have gotten for the quality of slipcover had I bought a new sofa. Also, I found some really nice belgian linen fabric at that Off the Bolt place in Oxnard. Not sure if it's still out there in the Olive Garden/Sportmart complex by the freeway, but it was cheaper than remnant store by about $15 per yard.

I "third" Ruben Vasquez. He is an old friend of mine from many years back and he has been in business for a long time. He has integrity and does quality work.

I had just the opposite experience at the Remnant Store. The guy is very nice and not an ultra salesman. He helped me hunt through bolts and samples until I found just the right one I was looking for. The price was slightly higher and well worth the difference because I knew what I was getting in the color shade I wanted. It's one of our few local, long time owned stores left and I feel we should try to take our business there as tempting as the Internet can be.

I agree about spending a little more to shop local. But a $900 difference is not a little more. I say this as a local retailer; I know what my margins have to be and how mass-retailers operate, so I'm really careful to buy only things that are not in mass, that are not heavily discounted in mass, or that are worth imho a small markup to the customer. By small I mean $2 on an item under $20, etc. However detailing how you used a local store as an unpaid showroom while dissing the owner, well... I wouldn't boast about that. He pays for all those books. Of course it's cheaper online.

I just had two slipcovers made at Sofa U Love and they did a beautiful job. I know that they also do upholstering.

I brought some dining room chairs in dire need of reupholstering to Jasmine Kova, 2529 Chapala St., and she not only did a beautiful job of reupholstering, she also rebuilt the seat cushions, all very reasonably. She works quickly and well, and is 3 minutes from downtown Santa Barbara. I hate driving down to Ventura and buy fabric at the Remnant Store all the time--they are helpful and reasonably priced, in my view.

Anyone have the phone number for the Vasquez fella in Ventucky? I've got some chairs that need upholstery... I think I'll go with him based on these comments here. Thank you.

Mena's upholstery on S. Kellogg in Goleta. Reasonable and fast. I have had several pieces done and been very happy with the results.

Renga quoted 'approx.1100.00 plus fab. tks.' What should a typical couch cost to reupholster?

Hi - In search of an upholsterer, I of course turned to Edhat. Based on the other recommendations I searched and found Ruben Vasquez in Ventura. He told me he moved his workshop south from SB 5-6 years ago because of rent increases (familiar tune, ey?) His workshop in Ventura is in an industrial park N.W. of the Johnson exit. I found it easily. Here's his contact info for anyone looking to have work done. He is reasonably priced and is skilled at the art of upholstery. He is also very pleasant to do business with, I think you will be pleased! Vasquez Upholstery - 805-570-8830.

Hi Everyone, I know that things don't change that much in a year, but, I am also looking for someone to upholster an old living room chair and also fix the inner springs. Just wanted to check back on this thread to see who is being recommended in SB these days? I will have to borrow a truck to transport the chair so would like to keep it closer than Ventura. Thank you!
