Rent a Car

Anybody have a suggestion on where to rent a Toyota Prius (or other car that gets extremely good fuel economy) for 10 days in July. Need to go from SB-Oregon and back.

Check with Toyota of Santa Barbara. They may rent them directly. We love our Prius!

Hertz has a "Green Collection" that includes a Toyota Prius Hybrid. Along with a few other MPG friendly cars.

I scoped out summer car rental prices out of SB for a friend recently, and I found that he could have rented a hybrid for $350 or a "normal" compact car for $125. Make sure you're not saving $10 on gas and paying $40 for the privilege.

We're wanting to lease a Prius for a year starting January. We really don't want to buy one as they are incredibly ugly/small. We need it because of an anticipated 3 hour commute for 9 months (5 days per week). Any suggestions? The other option is moving out of town/ subleasing for that time but that doesn't work because we'd like to keep the kids in their schools.

Avis on Montecito Street have cheap cars with good MPG. Alas, you can't rent a small Diesel locally.

Re Enterprise: You can only drive them in California, Arizona and Nevada (although not sure how they would know if you went elsewhere unless you had an accident or got a ticket).

Your rental car has GPS. They know where you buy gas, where you eat , where you sleep. They know when you cross a state line and know your speed in relation to the posted limits. Violating the rules you signed for in all that paperwork that we never read can put a big bite on your Visa card.

Buy a VW diesel Golf, Jetta, etc., use it for your commute, and sell it for 95% of your purchase price or more when you are done. Gets as good or better mileage than the Prius and is rarer so has better resale value.

You think a Prius is small? They are HUGE. My mother in law transports 2 greyhounds plus 2 people in hers, regularly. Oh wait, I drive a Miata. Spent $4K on it 4 years ago, get 30 mph highway. Insurance is next to nothin'. Could probably get at least $3K for it still today. But to YOU it must be miniscule, and therefore unacceptable! ;-) BTW ditto on checking with Toyota of SB about renting a Prius (barf) from them or a very short term lease.
