Yoga Studios
updated: Jun 01, 2011, 11:25 AM

I am looking for subscribers' recommendations on the best yoga studios and classes in town. I am looking for a drop-in, flow yoga class conducted at an athletic pace. Thanks.

Yoga Soup has some good flow classes. Bikram is also really nice for an intense athlete to incorporate into a weekly routine.

Barbara Rose teaches a terrific flow-type class on Saturday at 930 am at the Santa Barbara Yoga Center. Adrienne Hengels does a power flow class on MWF at Yoga Soup at 930 that is also great. My two favorite yogis in SB.

I get a monthly pass at Russa Yog (rope yoga), which has two studios, one on the Mesa on the corner of Cliff and Meigs and the new one on State and De la Guerra. It is very strength oriented.

I also recommend Eddie's Yoga Soup classes and Nicole's Ashtanga classes at Source.

Yoga Soup or the Yoga Center has the most to offer as far as diversity of classes and great ambiance. Source Yoga is smaller and more personal.

Try Adult Ed classes. I take from Holly Hungett who is a wonderful instructor at Adult Ed, and there are other instructors with the Adult Ed program. Check out the SBCC website for Adult Ed, now under the Continuing Ed umbrella.

Iyengar Yoga Studio of Santa Barbara is headed up by Richard McGlauhlin and his wife Emma Jane. Located on 2718 De La Vina just above Alamar. Richard has helped me develop a healthy practice and has a dedicated following. Iyengar yoga is unique in that it comes from 80 year old practicioner Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar. My favorite is Russa Yog,a very muscular type yoga using rope and fabric. Every part of your body is impacted at the end of a 1 hour session. Owners jasprit and Teresa Singh are great. Very welcoming and caring people.

The Yoga Center is the best in the city. Of course, followed by the specific types of yoga practice like Bikram or Russa Yog. A lot of people love Yoga Soup, but I personally can't stand it: Eddie's ego and preaching are almost as annoying to me as the countless cougars in their being rude and unaware of others and showing off their yoga outfits. (Once again my impression, but so not for me). I want to focus on my practice and feel great afterward, not gross. (Again, maybe that's just me).

Vreeland Yoga, affiliated with Center Point Pilates, is excellent for traditional yoga. Classes are small and adapted to individual needs and levels.

I used to go to a place in Newport Beach when I lived there and there was a guy who led the class through relaxation poses. Instead of saying "relax your neck; relax your shoulders," etc., he'd explain how to do that (it's not obvious). We'd end the class with deep breathing and practice letting go of anger, envy, sadness, etc., with every breath. So far, have not found anyone in this area who leads a class so well....

I agree with 17889P and am also a fan of Holly Hungett's class through Adult Ed. She's great.

I really like yoga soup, esp since that rude rude front desk girl with the long dark hair and the south african accent is no longer there. She didn't give a very yogi vibe. Lots of varied class selection there, and i have never heard eddie preach, he just smiles and says hi whenever i see him. Haven't tried the iyengar studio, i used to teach a few years ago and was trained in iyengar method, awesome healing yoga practice, not fluffy or souless. I'll have to try them out :) i have taken adult ed, i prefer to do my yoga in a warm room, cold room yoga makes me miserable and your muscles don't ever warm up. As far as SB yoga center, i highly recommend jennifer stienwertzel's classes, she rocks!!!

I take yoga classes at the YMCA. There are about 20 classes a week and one sees all levels/abilities in most every class. My $55 monthly membership also gives me access to the whole place - cardio machines, etc. and numerous other classes, e.g. pilates and zumba.

I can't say enough about the Iyengar Yoga Studio of Santa Barbara Yoga Studio on De La Vina. I have been going since it ipened a few years ago. Unpretentious, no nonsense, pure Iyengar Yoga - that's the only type of yoga they do there. Richard is an amazing yoga teacher - totally knows what he is doing. The front desk staff are friendly and lnowledgable and they are not trying to sell you health supplements or yoga clothes or jewelry - none of that there, just yoga! Recommend it.
