I take all 4 of my cars to Under The Hood Automotive. Jaya works on every type of car and does it well. Probably the nicest shop in town too.

I recommend Wendell at Milano Motors in Goleta. It's his shop so he answers only to himself, and he's incredibly fair and honest.

Why go straight to the head gasket, it could be a freeze plug, a loose hose clamp, a pinhole in a hose. Whatever you do, don't go into a shop and tell them you "think" it might be a blown head gasket. They might "think" you have bottomless pockets!

I've used John Hurley for my Ford Explorer for all of the 13 years I've owned it.... and it just keeps going and going. He's a homegrown local boy - super nice - super honest and has gone out of his way many times to help. his shop is in the West Beach area back by Tri County Produce.

I recommend that you go to Car Talk web site. Look for the "Mechanics Files". Enter your zip code and maybe car mfg'r. They will have a list of recommended mechanics. Used this to get my kids cars taken care of in distant cities. Here, for a GM car I use National Motors, Carl Needham . Very good, but I don't know if he does Fords. He fixed a coolant leak that I had recently--it was the water pump.

Daryl Kunze @ Fairview Motors is honest, reasonable, and knows his stuff. I've taken a variety of vehicles to him for over 20 years and I'm always satisfied with his professionalism. Nice guy, too.

Scott of Scott's Mobile repair just fixed both my car and my mom's car last week. He has been working on all of the family cars for last 10 years or so and does a great job. Nice thing is he comes to where your car is too. 886-9431 or 685-2001 Best thing is unlike the dealer he actually figures out what the root problem is the first time. Not say it is one thing because they didn't take the time to really look into the problem and just look at the surface. (Hughes last year- told me my oil was dirty and charged me for a complete oil flush even though I just had the oil changed. Turned out the reason the oil was dirty and the reason the car was overheating- the reason I brought the car in originally- was the coolant was leaking into the engine).

Airport Motors. It's near the airport, curiously enough. Honest and not expensive.

If you've blown a head gasket you probably can't drive your car anymore. Plus it's gonna cost you a couple thousand minimum to fix it. Why bother? Just buy a new car.
