My wife and I are looking for a new king size bed and don't want to get ripped off. Any suggestions or great deals in the Santa Barbara, Carpinteria area?

We shopped two months ago and found our new cal king at Timbuktu on Canon Perdido. I always thought this place was cheap, but I must say our bed is high quality and was very affordable ( you can tell it's the same bed/different label offered just around the corner). Sales folks are very busy, but service did not suffer too badly. Friends purchased a mattress from Costco around the same time and are very disappointed in the "crater" now in the middle of the bed, company came out w/measuring defice and deem the mattress o.k.

Anywhere buy Costco...you can see at least one getting returned every weekend.

Costco, when they have them. Ours is 5+ years old and doing just fine. comparison price shopping is nearly impossible with mattresses as they deliberately have individual sku's for each retailer to stop comparison shopping!

Do research online to find the most reliable manufacturers -- that's more important than where you buy the bed. There are a lot of places in town that cater to students, so the beds they sell tend to be cheap since they don't have to last that long. We just replaced a 15-y.o. Simmons Beautyrest that we liked very much with a newer Simmons model and we're happy with it. A lot of places sell Simmons. We got ours at The Mattress Expo at Carpeteria in Goleta.

I love the Costco Sleep Science "Ara" memory foam bed (also have tried the Pure Comfort line but they are a bit harder). Haven't had to go to the chiropractor since getting one last year.

Sears - they carry the extra firm Sealy Posturpedic - you can get free delivery and haul away; if they are offering a special, you can also get 0% interest for up to 24 months

Mattress Mikes - We have purchased several of our mattresses from them, good deals! They have a website with prices/options, etc.

Watch what your getting, we bought from a local shop, not Costco and it was not until we got the set home we noticed the RED tag stating it was a USED mattress!

The Shop did NOT mention it while selling it and the display must have had the tags against the wall so we did not know it.

No returns at the store either....very nice

I think selling used mattresses is illegal. We were told at one store that they don't take returns because the mattresses can't be resold.

Whatever you buy - test it out!

Lay on it like you'd sleep on it. Are you a side sleeper? Stomach down? Flat on the back?

Can't test - don't even think about it!

We got a NexGel king and it's THE BEST mattress we've even slept on. A bit spendy, but "you get what you pay for!"

I agree with @178P. We went to one store where the salesman kept trying to sell us on a bed he didn't have at the time but could order -- no way! I read somewhere that it's important to lie on each bed for at least 10 minutes. Since you will be sharing the bed, make sure both of you try it at the same time and shift positions, so you can see how much the bed will move when one of you turns over in the middle of the night.

We researched and researched - we waited until Memorial day weekend (last year) and got a great deal at Macy'
La Cumbre ... I know - it's not local, but we love it and know we got a great deal.

I was not the OP but I'm in the same situation, thanks for all the info posted!

We have a 5-ish year old TempurPedic that has "craters" from where we sleep. Unfortunately I never filled out and sent in the Warranty card. Now I cannot sleep comfortably through the night. Will never buy a TempurPedic again. Going back to "regular" coils.

We looked at Macy's and they have frequent sales. One of the salesmen even told us when the next sale was so we could save some money. We didn't buy there but they were very nice.

All the posters who recommended trying out the mattresses are 100% correct. You should NOT 'cheap out' when buying a mattress. We're talking about your quality of life, and believe me, good, restful sleep is something that cannot be taken too lightly. You cannot put too high a premium on sleep. Think of it as an investment in YOU, and you're worth it!! When my husband and I were first married and could not afford much we got a FIRM mattress, thinking this was the healthiest option...wrong. Fast forward to 10 years later and we were still on that crappy mattress! We decided to sell the farm and get the best one we could afford... still married at 25 years and counting...I credit the mattresses, in part!

That Timbuktu guy is a real piece of work, I'd never buy anything from him. For a good deal and peace of mind, try Costco, Macys (during their upcoming Memorial Day sale, you will likely get a good deal and free shipping, that's usually one of the best times to buy a mattress.) If something goes wrong, you want to be able to return to someone who will stand behind the product, not give you a runaround. I also agree it's not worth scrimping on this purchase. Set aside as much as you can afford to reasonably spend on this purchase.

Nothing beats a Tempurpedic. We have ours 3 years and it is as good as new. We did sign the lifetime warranty paperwork. It was expensive ($3000) and they rarely go on sale but You get what you pay for. Previous mattresses just don't do it for two people who have different mattress preferences. We both love this mattress.

We have a Tempurpedic, will never sleep on a regular mattress again. It's 6 years old and I still sleep like a baby on it and wake up without any aches or pains. Most nights I sleep in the same position for the entire night.

We tried out a very expensive mattress at a local furniture store and slept on it for three months. We both decided that it was not for us, we than ordered one online from Costco when they were having a big sale. We've been sleeping on this one for a few months and love it. Costco will deliver and set up and delivery is included in the price. Many times I buy from them online rather than from the store. In this case we wanted an eastern king and the store carries only cal king.

I got a great deal on a mattress at Macy's earlier this year, but had to deal with the worst customer service in my life; they rescheduled delivery several times without notifying me (I didn't receive my mattress for three months), customer service representatives were rude and unaware, and the delivery person hit on me and actually threatened my personal security. Go somewhere else -- Macy's isn't worth the deal.

Timbuktu sold me two twin USED beds for my kids. Didn't mention they were used. I noticed once they were home and saw the tags. They refused to take them back or refund any money. Those people are scum. I've never felt good about having my kids sleep on them but couldn't afford to get new ones.

Just be sure you like a pillowtop style before you buy it......it felt comfortable but its hot to sleep on. Also thanks to the leveraged buyouts of mattress companies a few years back, some executive figured out they would sell more mattresses if they could not flipped over. Cuts the life in half!

The mattress stores are all rip-offs. Go to website called THE MATTRESS EXPERTS. COM. Yes, this hurts local retailers but after being ripped off buying mattresses over the past years, so what?
Pete, who owns Mattress Experts is a great guy. He will spend time with you, help you make good decision, etc.
THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT---DETERMINE THE "level" OF THE MATTRESS YOU WANT----THE NAMES ON MATTRESSES ARE ALL DIFFERENT. FINDING THE "LEVEL" will give you the comparison shopping tool you need. ME's website shows you the "levels". Go to Macys, find their mattress name and compare it and the level
to ME.
Now for the best part----ME ships AT NO CHARGE thruout the country. No TAX, NO ship charges and a better price. I saved $300 by buying from ME---oh, and they gave me a free bedframe plus mattress cover.

Re: Used Mattresses--I have worked with a company that cleaned used mattresses. This was years ago...but they used an inclosed, heated furnace with formaldehyde treatment. I guess it would have met some federal approved standard.

Mattress Mike - I bought one from him years ago, when I first moved here and I remember him being really nice and getting a great deal. This was over 10 years ago and I had forgotten about him, but in the last few months our nanny, my sister and a close friend have all bought there, had great experiences, and love their mattresses :)

Getting ready to replace a 12 year old Tempurpedic. The memory foam looses resilience after a while and is extremely uncomfortable with many pressure points. We won't buy memory foam again.
