updated: May 04, 2011, 8:37 AM

Anyone have a recommendation for a local plastic surgeon who specializes in eyelid surgery? Specifically removing bags from under eyes?

Unlike word of mouth advice for a good carpet cleaner, cosmetic surgery is a serious step and it's advisable to consult in depth with your primary physician. Also one can research online.

I don't know if he does this procedure but I have had two medically necessary plastic surgeries in very visible areas with Dr. John Chapel here in town. He is fantastic.

Dr. Taban of Sansum Clinic is excellent, as I can attest. He did amazing work on my eye.

Dr. Chapple & Dr. Soares are both excellent doctors. From what I've heard, Chapple has a rather... uh, brisk bedside manner that turns some people off, but he really does fantastic work. I work for a doctor who refers people to both for medically necessary plastic surgery. Our patients generally seem to be very happy with work from both docs.
And I disagree with 132: Word of mouth advise is great for doctors. You should consult with your own doc, of course, but there is no harm in seeking referrals from people who've had experience. You also want to call a few plastic surgeons and ask if they have experience (and how much) doing that specific surgery.

Best for eyes by far is Dr. Frank Meronk in Oxnard. That's all he does.

We've both used him and so have many of our friends. Here's his website: link

Before going under the knife, consider some less drastic measures. There is a Clarisonic device that forces a special serum into the skin under the eyes that very effectively diminishes bags without plastic surgery. It is available locally.

EdhatBarbara: The Opal (the clairsonic device you mention) is a non- invasive option, and certainly something one can try first. However, the Opal pretty much just vibrates, which enables the anti-again eye serum to better penetrate the skin. Saying it forces a special serum into the skin makes it sound more drastic than it is. :) It's just a way to make those anti-aging potions work a tad better. (Side note, it's great for using after cosmetic procedures, too.) But it's not comparable to surgery. However, if the original poster hasn't tried a few months of a good anti-aging serum, obviously they should try that route before seeking the quick fix of surgery. And the opal will just help that along a bit. :) Also, the clairsonic brushes work great for keeping skin clear & exfoliating & helping skin look younger.

Best go to the best.. Dr. Grant Stevens in Marina Del Rey. He did some work on me and people can't even tell, but notice I look GREAT.... He gave me a very natural look. 4644 Lincoln Blvd, Suite 552, Marina del Rey, Ca 90292

Stayed at Serenity Surgical Aftercare . The nurses there told me that Dr. Stevens patients heal the fastest with the least amount of complications or pain !! They said they weren't kidding either !!!

There is an excellent plasric surgeon in Harley Street, but you will need to fly to London and stay there for one month.

I have several friends who were very happy with under eye surgery from Julio Soares in Goleta across from the hospital. He gets people all the way from Hollywood coming to him for his great reputation. But I hope you know how much these plastic surgeries cost. One friend paid $15,000 for face surgery including under the eyes, but not on the eye lids. That would have been something like $3,000 more. You need to make a consultation appointment where they examine you and what you want and then give you the price for each thing.

Dr. Gregory Keller in Santa Baraba is the best you can get. He teaches other doctors at UCLA and has many patents on his laser techniques and has written several text books. He is double board certified and is co-director of the Facial Plastci Surgery Fellowship at UCLA.
