Animation Appraisal
updated: May 02, 2011, 4:08 PM
Does anyone know of someone local that can appraise some original signed Walt
Disney animation cels and drawings? I have about 15 pieces that I would like to sell
and am trying to find an approximate value of each.
Wondering if there is a local art or animation dealer/collector that could help.
Thank you!

I'm going to offer the obvious. The Disney Burbank studio is less than a two hour drive from SB. Go to Disney studios and get an opinion from the experts.

I usually go on Ebay and see if there's anything similar to what I'm trying to sell and see what's listed. It's a good starting point.

I'd suggest contacting Joe Maddalena at Profiles in History, down in Calabasas. He's a long-time historical documents/animation/hollywood dealer/auctioneer. He currently has a huge amount of Disney material in his current auction (May 14th/15th). He knows his stuff. www.profilesinhistory.com Good luck.

Found some stuff on Ebay. I searched "Disney Cel Autograhed" and came up with over 50 very high priced items. Over $500 each. Another key word would be "signed"

See if you can find a way to contact Don Iwerks. He lives or lived here and is the son of Ub Iwerks, Walt Disney's longtime friend and animation collaborator. Someone at the Film Festival office may be ableto put you on the scent.

Contact the American Society of Appraisers and ask for a certified appraiser for this specialty. That's the best way if you need an appraiser for insurance or legal purposes. My dad used to do this, but is retired. You probably want someone who does art or personal property.

Be really sure you get the true value. I knew the widow of one of the 7 orginal artists, her Snow Whites were valued up (way) in the thousands, and that was years ago.

You really need someone who isn't also a buyer or who isn't going to lowball an estimate and then send you to a friend who will buy them off you for 10k less than they are worth. You need a professional appraisal service. Dan, Disney doesn't appraise their work. You can't just drive up and ask them what things are worth, lol.

Elizabeth Stewart Appraisals - she is ab fab and has a encyclopedic knowledge - I'm sure she would know or be able to direct you to the right place. She helped me out and it was a great experience. You can contact her by e-mail: elizabethappraisals@gmail.com or She's also got a radio show called "Art & Antiques" AM1290 live on Friday 10 - 11 a.m., repeats on Fri. nite at 8 p.m. - 9 p.m. and again on Sunday from 11 am to noon. Tell her Mo sent you. #718 had a good suggestion on Iwerks. There are two sons here in town, both artists. I used to handle PR for film fest when a granddaughter had a doc in the festival about Ub - it was great. John Iwerks I believe has an art studio on the Mesa that's open occasionally or by appt. Good luck !
