Any recommendations for a doctor in internal medicine? I'm looking for one to address my general health needs. I have cerebral palsy so my situation requires a little more than a general practitioner. Closer to Goleta would be preferable. So far Dr. Wilmanns has been suggested to me. Thanks!

Thumbs way up for Dr. Jeffrey Hadsell at Sansum. Not sure if he's still there but he was my doctor for many years and appreciated how he really got to the heart of the matter by asking so many questions----in other words, he really cared.

Dr. Glenn Hollinshead in Goleta Same comments at Hadsell. He really diagnoses before prescribing. And cares. I have seen him for over 25 years.

Beverly Brott, MD. She doesn't accept insurance but you get personalized care and you get your money's worth. No sitting in a waiting room for an hour only to see a Physician's Assistant or a different doctor every time you come to the clinic. She is an excellent internist when it come to the complicated cases and she is good with routine, day to day things too. Fair prices, downtown office

Thanks for the referrals. I don't have a doc. and have been thinking about going to Sansum; can one ask for a specific doctor there? (And how to avoid (and why?) David Mandel?) There are several Sansums; does one just call them and ask for a specific doctor, eg. Dr. Daniel, or are you assigned to one?

Some of the names on here are people I would never go to, or go back to. Please, do yourself a huge favor and get a referral from someone who actually knows what it takes to make a good doctor, preferrably someone who is in the same profession. If you have a doctor in any field you like, ask them. It's a small town full of more bad doctors than good believe it or not. And getting a referral from another doctor means worlds more than some average joe here.

I am a nurse in town and I actually think that asking doctors who they would recommend to you is a terrible idea. It is a community based on referrals for income. For example, I work for a particular specialist (who happens to be a reasonably talented physician) but refers most of his patients to the worst surgeon in town because he, in turn, refers them back for follow up. Be careful of the you scratch my back I'll scratch yours philosophy. It is very prevalent in SB. Ask a nurse instead who she would send a loved one to. He/she may not come out and say who NOT to go to but may tactfully refer you to a "better" choice.

Dr. Christopher Donner @ Sansum. He is kind, patient, knowledgeable and very well informed. I have been seeing him for at least 15 years and he has listened to my concerns and I am not an easy patient - I question everything and want to know about all available options. To 481P - Sansum is no more of a hassle than any other medical office. You make an appointment, pay your co-pay, see the doctor. Pretty much the same anywhere.

I agree on the referral system, it's mostly for scratching each others backs. I hope that along with the internist that you have a dentist for your teeth, eye doctor for your eyes, Chiropractor for your physical challenges...

I had been looking forward to more female internists. That has been a disappointment. Five have either gone out of business or moved elsewhere. Having babies is the problem. As well as being a single mom. Dr. Uyesaka's partner is one of them. She is the fifth I am losing, a smart doctor. Can't tell from the comments how many of the posters are women commenting about male doctors. A male doctor may be fine for a man but can often become dismissive and arrogant towards informed and pro-active women patients. Let's get some responses from women - which doctors do they like.

Dr. Chris Donner & his PA, Rosanna Petronella are my Internal Specialist at Sansum on Pesetas. I have been going to them for over 20 yrs and they are the most well informed and caring people who always give me all the time I need at each visit. My Primary Care Doctor is Dr. Randall Howard at Sansum on Patterson Ave. He referred me to Dr. Donner. Sansum has a wonderful Team of Doctors who work together for ME!!

I agree that Sansum is a hassle. I've waited up to an hour + to see a doctor and often don’t get test results----once they were actually sent to a woman that lives about 30 miles away; she looked my name up and called me! I've had the same Dr. for 10 years + and still get treated like a new patient with no history. His office staff often looks bored or apathetic; sometimes don’t bother looking up when addressed. His nurses are GREAT though! See details below.

Continuation from my previous post: An ex-ray tech once recognized me as the person with (whatever). I told him he must be mistaken; he insisted and SHOWED me! When I brought it up to my Dr., he said he had informed me a few years back (and can prove it in his notes). Now, seriously, if he had told me, I'm not the type to "forget" or passively dismiss it without running home and looking it up. I don't dispute that he THOUGHT he had informed me---perhaps another case of test results that never made it to my mailbox, or maybe he tasked one of his bored staff to call me and she forgot?

I have had trouble with patient confidentiality as it related to Sansum as well. Not my confidentiality but I received a complete documentation of another patients cardiac rehab records via mail. I shredded them right away. I have also had miserable problems with their billing department. They charged me for tests that my insurance covered then sent me to collections when I wouldn't pay it. The doctors may be competent but the support staff isn't. I wouldn't go there even if I had to drive to LA to find a doctor.
