We have our 3 dogs' teeth cleaned every year and there is a vast difference in prices and quality around town. We now only go to Your Pals Pet Hospital, Bonnie Franklin, DVM, MS on Lillie in Summerland. Her facility is tops with the latest equipment, caring and well trained staff. Her prices are extremely fair, no gouging here! No unnecessary tests being shoved on you that aren't needed. She is the best we have used in SB and cannot recommend her enough. We love our dogs and give them the care they deserve, you can tell Dr. Franklin cares too. You will absolutely LOVE going there!

Definitely do some 'shopping' around as prices can verge on the ridiculous. Our older lab needed some teeth cleaning, and even though I still love our vet, I was more than a bit shocked when presented a bill for $800...yes, you read that right. It was explained to me (beforehand) that because of the dog's age, blah, blah, that he would require what amounted to a surgery and all the support that entails. My husband's comment afterwards, "well that's the last teeth cleaning that dog will ever get"...it was, and he was fine.

Milk Bones, an all-kibble diet, and - once in a great while - a toothbrush with chicken flavored dog toothpaste. And she has the best teeth around! (Even the vet says so)

We had a hard time finding any cleaning under $600 in this town... of course most vets had special lab tests they "needed" to perform.

I ran into the same problem when it came time to spay our rabbit... $400+ (wow!)

In Ventura prices were considerably less... enough to warrant a drive down there...(and do some shopping at Target while waiting. :) )

(by the way... we finally found a perfect vet to take care of our rabbit at the Bird and Cat Clinic on Mission - love her)

I felt your pain, and good luck. I learned such an expensvie lesson with that, you better believe my new pooch was introduced to the Dremmel (for nail maintenance) and the toothbrush early on and regularly.

About once a month The Little Dog House (home of Cold Noses, Warm Hearts Dog Rescue) would have a no-anesthesia dog dental hygenist come and clean dog's teeth for around $80 - 90. It certainly costs less than having a vet anesthetize, and is not as risky for the dog! I'm not sure if their still doing it, but it's worth a call.

Valley Animal Hospital on Fairview. Dr. Rugg is excellent.

Valley Animal Hospital may be excellent but they're pricey. Ask first the cost.

There is a no-anesthesia dog tooth cleaner who comes through town every few months. The price is about $150, as compared to $600 for the vet, and you don't have the risk of general anesthesia. I can't remember the name of the company, though I do remember the tech who came to our house was named Ellie.

Yup, dog teeth cleaning is expensive. My dog is one with a small jaw and more attention is needed. He's a rescue so not too cooperative with my brushing the teeth. Noah's Ark has changed hands and I felt very uncomfortable last time I was in there so am shopping for a new vet. A friend's dog had a terrible teeth cleaning experience at Valley Animal Hospital. Interesting to see it recommended twice!

The no-anesthesia tooth cleaning doesn't work, it's basically a rip off and it doesn't remove plaque so it's a waste of money. Too bad nobody has managed to invent something that is less dangerous than going under general, but that's the best bet. I recommend White's, Dr. Douglas is the best. It's well worth the price to get them cleaned since dirty teeth lead to heart plaque buildup later in life.

Many people are voicing frustration that teeth cleaning is expensive--as much as $600 to $800.

I am not a veterinarian, but I DO appreciate a good one. Bear in mind that these are doctors with all the accumulated expenses of college and veterinary school, often further training in internships and residencies, and the cost of setting up a practice--rent or mortgage, equipment, and qualified employees. And they make WAY less money than physicians.

Factor in, finally, that procedure like dentals are infrequent but superb opportunities for your dog's doctor to check blood work, screen for tumors or skin lesions, and catch chronic and old-age diseases like diabetes or Cushing's--thus saving you the cost and stress of a acute crisis. And then there is the prevalence of gum disease and fractured teeth in older pets. Would you want to just stop going to the dentist and live with a rotten tooth?

I think anyone--including "that dog" mentioned above deserves basic medical care. It's part of the responsibility of owning a pet. And most veterinarians may not advertise it, but are willing to work with reliable clients.

After a dog reaches 9 or 10, it should have pre-dental blood work to make certain they will be OK with the anesthesia needed for the teeth cleaning. For around $50 at My Pals in Summerland, it is worth it to us to make certain our little ones will be OK. You don't have to do it, just a precaution. Teeth cleaning is about $300 and I doubt you will find a better vet in town, we love her!!!!

@870 - I didn't recommend Valley, but said "may be excellent," as a friend says it is --- I asked the price and went elsewhere.

Dogs and cats who are given Hills TD biscuits as part of their diet each day rarely need teeth cleaning. It has a patented fiber in it which other biscuits don't have.
It comes in cat, small dog and large dog size. I recommended it for years in my practice and found it to be a great product.
Watch for my book, Feeding Fido, and read about it.

As a dog ages, teeth cleaning can be a huge help. My 14 year old dog started acting like a puppy again and feeling great after her teeth were cleaned! Please don't waste your money on the non-anesthesia cleaning - as posted, it does not do anything and is a huge rip-off. I highly recommend Buena Pet Hospital in Ventura (by Target on Telephone.) Generally they are quite a bit less expensive then SB, and the vets there are amazing. You can always call and get an idea of prices before deciding what to do. Good luck!

Our team vet is treating a small dog that went into heart failure from having her teeth cleaned at Lemo's. PLEASE all pet owners, have your Vet do any and all teeth cleaning. In the end you will save $$, as well as your dogs life...
What started out as saving $150, tuned into costing the dog owner $1,000 in vet bills, and a dog fighting for her life. NOT worth it.

LOL at all the vet shills telling us non-anesthesia cleaning doesn't work, or will make your dog sick. Animallistner, how exactly did the dog go into heart failure from getting it's teeth cleaned? 168917P, why wouldn't non-anesthesia teeth cleaning remove plaque? It's not a complicated concept -- you just scrape it off.

Non-anesthesia teeth cleaners do exactly the same thing the vets do with the dog's teeth, except they don't use general anesthesia. It takes a longer time since you need to be gentle, which is why vets don't want to do it -- they have a lot of overhead with employees and rent, and need to move the animals through more quickly to stay in business.

Someone coming to your house to clean your dog's teeth doesn't have that overhead, and can charge less. Other than that, it's exactly the same service.

DR. OTTO in Carpinteria is the man to see. He IS the very best vet in this whole region of California.

Based on experiences exploring a lot of vets locally in the past 30-some years, we're convinced that Dr. Otto very probably is the best veterinarian between LA and SF, possibly best in this whole western USA..

He's about a 25 mile drive each way for us, and we're convinced it's well worth every drop of gas, because Dr. Otto is so superior.

I second the vote for Little Dog House for the no knock out teeth cleaning. They did a great job on my little guy, and it was very reasonable.

Dr. Bud, thanks for the TD biscuit tip. An ounce of prevention! Looking forward to that book of yours.

Hundreds of dollars for teeth cleaning!!!!

I suggest getting a parrot: the annual wings, nails, and beak care by Dr. Christine Sellers of Cat and Bird was about $30.

:)

Seconding the comment regarding the excellence of Dr. Otto and his staff at Carpenteria Veterinary Hospital. We have taken our multitude of pet family members there for all office visits, treatments, teeth cleaning, surgeries under anesthesia and general advice on any and all health matters relating to our pets for the past fifteen years or more.

One night several years ago, Dr. Otto stayed on the phone all night with us "holding our hands" - so-to-speak - during a scary new experience of seeing our Pappillion, Lillie, give birth to her new puppies.

We were advised by the founder of one of SB's most well-known and respected dog rescue groups when first moving here from Florida that Dr.Otto was the finest choice for a family veterinarian (although a bit of a drive from our new home in Montecito) and certainly this has proved to be wonderful advice.

Surely there are many great veterinarians in SB County -- just passing along another vote of confidence from a family that values its pets more than anything else.
