Bakersfield's Good Side

If you've ever had kids playing organized sports, it seems you will inevitably be called out to play a tournament in beautiful Bakersfield. To us, Bakersfield is kind of a junior Los Angeles, complete with traffic, smog, endless strip malls and a little too much heat. So this time around, we took advantage of the couple of hours between soccer games and made a run up the Kern River. On the map, Lake Isabella looked pretty darn close, and with the hills still green from recent rains, we figured it would be a scenic drive. We were right. The road goes through a very narrow gap in the mountains, making for some incredible rapids that had the Kern River busting at the seams. The narrow road winds alongside the river for quite a ways until it opens up to Lake Isabella. We barely had time to get out and stretch our legs, but we made it. And we were back in time for the second game! Beats hanging out in the hotel room…
