Fishing Lake
updated: Apr 26, 2011, 10:30 AM
Good fishing lake near SB? I am interested in finding a
nice lake to do some fishing this weekend. Hopefully
something other than the overcrowded Lake Casitas or
lake Cachuma, but something in the Ojai area or north?
Any ideas appreciated.

Cachuma Lake is a tough lake but good once you find the ever elusive 'pattern'. Here in Goleta, Lake Los Carneros is a true sleeper. If you can get to the back of the lake in a row boat or kayak, you will be pleased. I have caught some huge largemouth from my kayak (but no one believes me). Good luck!

Cachuma and Casitas are probably less crowded than almost any lakes in the this area. Cachma covers 3250 acres when full and has a 42-mile shoreline. Casitas has 32 miles of shoreline. You should be able to find an uncrowded place. Other wise the next closest lade to Ojai is Piru which is smaller and more crowded. To the north would be Lake Lopez in Arroyo Grande [1.5 hour drive] It is also smaller then Cachuma or Casitas. On a week end it would probably be tooo crowded for you also

Lake Casitas is not overcrowded now that they have the quagga mussel quarantine on boats. Good luck...

I too have kayaked Lake Los Carneros and been VERY pleased with the big bass I've pulled out (and released). Lake Lopez in good, but typically mornings only - the winds do howl afternoon!

The Alisal River Golf Course is excellent. You will need to wear all black and go at night however.

Wonder if the anglers read Edhat. Saw two people fishing late this afternoon at Lake Los Carneros. One was in a kayak.

Cachuma is great if you know where to go and have some local insight thrown your way. I'll include a map link at the bottom of the post so you know the locations I'm referring to. Trout - I always find trolling is your best bet to not get skunked. Trout are definitely catch-able from the shorelines, but I limit every time when out on the boat trolling. I troll across the mouth of Johnson Bay heading west following the deep water along the cliffs then out in front of the dam and straight up the middle to start the run again. It's sort of a tear drop pattern. How deep depends on water temps, this time of year they are not that deep yet, I would start at 3 - 6 colors. Small Mouth - I can always catch a few along the same cliffs just west of Johnson Bay, but closer in. Jigs or Night Crawlers/Red Worms work great there. Crappie - I can get into the Crappie pretty good right off of Jack Rabbit Flats and Storke Flats...I'm not giving away too much on location here...cause them are some good eats ;)...once you find them though, you'll be happy for sure. Red Ear Perch - Same area's as the Crappie (they seem to migrate around the lake more though, so you gotta go find them) and better eating IMHO..you can get into a school of those right off the reeds around Storke Flats...fun fish and super tasty! Hope that helps a little if you make it out to Cachuma! Here's the link to the map. link
